Not going to reply to any specific post on this thread but what I don't understand about the police and crime reports like this is, why don't they send a drone with a 4k camera and sound recording in to assess the scene first and respond appropriately? Much cheaper and less risky than piling in with an ARU I would have thought?

I would guess their argument would be that in the time it's taken for the drone to check it out, a real gunman could shoot a dozen people.

Whether or not that's a valid argument I leave to others.

England, 2023

Your understanding of your location and the year is outstanding. Well done.

If you can tell me who the president is, I'll let you be on your way, sir.

Would you like to point out where I have mentioned nasty police in my post?
It's not a narrative that the Met rammed a 13 year old boy off his bike and pointed guns at him for holding a water pistol it's a fact.
You could point to the difficulties the police have in doing such a job as mitigating factors but there is no point pretending that this event didn't happen

Of course this event happened however it is also a fact that the boy was knocked from his bike because the police received a report that he was pointing a gun.
In the circumstances their actions appear perfectly reasonable and proportionate.

This made me giggle

“Specialist officers are trained on specific tactics including using vehicles to bring cyclists to a stop.”

In my experience, that isn’t really a specialism.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

There is a valid point that toys should be more obviously toys but others have pointed out that real weapons are being deliberately made to look like toys so it doesn't entirely solve the problem. The Amazon link above is interesting as it claims the target audience for it is adults.

However, the real issue in all this is whether the context was properly assessed by those who should be experts in all this. The fact nobody thought (until the press publicised it) that this needed some investigation is astounding. Further, the idea from you and others on this thread that we ought to live in a shoot first, ask questions later culture is worrying. Yes, armed police have a difficult and dangerous job, but they should be able to react calmly and rationally due to their training.

Is it possible that, with all their training, the only way the situation could be fully assessed is by knocking the boy off his bike and pointing multiple lethal weapons at him? Is it possible that it further required him to be handcuffed afterwards? Without being there we probably don't know. The point of the investigation will be to find out from those eyewitnesses (and body/dash cam footage if it hasn't been deleted by now) whether this is so. Further, perhaps it will help prevent the same response to a similar situation in the future.
