Just playing it in the office when I saw your thread. I must admit I wasn't expecting much, but first up it's a really good song. The work that has gone in to getting it to this point is incredible as well so it's a winner for me. The four note phrase has already found its way in to my head as well.

McCartney's film about the making of the single is fascinating. The remaining Beatles knew about it from the mid-nineties, but it wasn't until relatively recently that the technology existed to be able to pull John's voice out clearly from the demo of the song he'd made in the late 1970s. The original tape had the piano obscuring the vocals to the point of inaudibility.
I think Paul has done his old mate proud. To turn this demo
into a finished piece of music is quite remarkable.
Ok, it's not going to compare with the group at their peak. But I think it's very moving in the context that John was murdered a year after recording the demo, George is no longer with us and I doubt very much that we will have either Paul or Ringo much longer.
So just as 'The End' on Abbey Road was a great way for 4 men in their twenties to sign off on their time being in the biggest and most influential band in history, 'Now and Then' is a lovely way for two men in their eighties to work one more time on music with their departed bandmates.

Speaking about the Paul and Ringo part, I hope they both get to 100, unlikely but it's possible

Sums up my thoughts perfectly Glassers.
The last time they were all in the studio was August 1969.
It's impossible to compare the track with their extraordinary back catalogue and legacy.
I feel the same about Real love and Free as a bird. Not classics, but part of an amazing canon.
Now and then just has an additional poignancy. It's well done and I'm glad they did it.
Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

There's also something very moving about hearing Paul's aged and fragile voice singing with John's eternally youngish one, when they should have been aging at the same rate.

I can't say I love the video, thought most of it was good but the green screen pratting about bits just seemed so obviously fake and pointless - thought the ending was fantastic, and certain parts of it through to that point but just got a bit silly

Agree to disagree mate. I loved the video. It felt very special.
And yes, love the song too.

That's embarrassing. I hope young people don't watch this and think to themselves - OMG is that what all the fuss is all about.
There is a time and place for all of this. The Beatles had their moment and it was outstanding. Not now. The song is awful and I can't imaging it would get on to any of their records. The video itself is laughable - in a bad way.
It's an indulgent memorial by old folks for old folks. It doesn't belong anywhere near contemporary music. It's bad ELO and they were already bad.
I'm old and completely understand the place the Beatles take in popular culture. This doesn't add anything. It detracts from every wonderful thing that have done.

I like the silly bits as the song is quite sad and has a lot of baggage. So the silly bits made me smile. The faded end was a real tear jerker though.

Maybe im getting sentimental but i thought it was a decent song. Like a last lament from the Beatles.
Seeing the old and young versions of them in a video made me a touch emotional in the way Bowie's last album did.
