Dear Rishi... 14:14 - Nov 20 with 3660 viewsredrickstuhaart

Are you really sure it's time to cut tax?

Perhaps noone has informed you but the health service, court system, immigration system, mental health provision and social care are all broken and all public sector employees have once again had real terms paycuts.

I do trust that the inclination towards tax cuts is not just an electoral gambit or cynical attempt to hamstring the next administration.

“ now the government has achieved its pledge to halve inflation by the end of the year”

Disingenuous to the last. The BoE could take SOME credit, but it is independent of government. Disinflation has been mostly driven by the fall in commodity prices, and the Dollar weakening in 2023. If they are going to take credit for that they should also take responsibility for inflation peaking above the EU average despite the UK not being reliant of Russian gas.

The government have done sh1t all to tackle inflation, except for telling us not to ask for a payrise. Dishonest as ever, but I’m sure plenty will believe it.

All of the independent forecasts had inflation going below 5% by the end of the year. He may as well have pledged that the government would achieve November.

It'll be their usual high profile tax cut(s) whilst balancing out with simultaneous stealth taxes I reckon.

It is all okay, everyone.

The tax cuts will be effectively self funding by the simple expedient of reducing poor peoples' benefits.

Of course it’s time: there’s an election coming! It matters not a hot whether it’s good for the poor, hospitals, the self employed, the Police, courts, prisons, teachers etc etc…..it only matters that it may help retain power. That’s it. That’s all it is. The benefit of any tax cuts looks no further than 12 months. They couldn’t care less if any cuts may ruin people, industries, jobs etc after 12 months. Short termism. That’s it. Predictable and depressing.

I'm not opposed to tax cuts seeing as we are all facing the highest tax burden for 70 years, but they need to be the right tax cuts.

I have no faith that the Conservatives will make the decision to cut tax that help the people who need it most.

The example Rishi gave in terms of how they contributed to inflation decrease was "we didn't give public sector workers a pay rise".

Brilliant stuff. I mean, we clapped for some of them in 2020, what more do they want?

As an aside, the real driver for this was falling energy prices. Which won't have been passed on directly because of the carefully manufactured lack of competition in this country.

8.5% thank you. Benefits by a lower amount, probably between 6-7%.

Anybody who votes for this lot after recent years seriously needs to get their head examined lie after lie yes I understand all parties tell lies people not attending loved one's funerals and their attending parties Jesus keep their tax cut. At the moment Britain is broken the NHS ,schools , police, prisons all in a muddle and offering tax cuts to help a select few somebody got a hellava job when they get kicked out probably just what they want.

Also while we're here Rishi, it's not ok to 'just let people die and that's ok'.

I'm surprised nobody's said much about the ongoing revelations coming out of the Covid Inquiry. He should be getting hammered for having the same 'let the bodies pile high' view as Johnson. That's the front of Labour's manifesto right there if they can be bothered to use it.

I think some of the commentators I've heard via the beeb today are right in that the focus for this statement will be easing things for business, the big giveaways for households will be saved for the Spring budget as this will be closer to election time.
