it's got nothing to do with footballers, it was someone in the crowd, as with the sad event at our game...

Rather poor form of someone to use the death of a lady in her 80's at our game very recently, to link this stuff up innit

I'm not sure there's any anger in Positivity's post, champ.

He's being exceptionally restrained in pointing out the absolute insanity of your position.

Once again, as you seem to be missing my posts... Care to provide us with any evidence above and beyond just screaming "oPen YoUR eyES!!!!!"?

about 3 people are.

those with any scientific knowledge are pointing to an ageing football spectator population, massive public health cuts since 2010 and a rise in obesity

And the fact that it's never been that uncommon for people to have heart attacks or similar at football matches. Games used not to be stopped and the situations quite as highlighted as they are now.

Given the sheer number of people at matches across the country on a Saturday, it's inevitable that some will be taken ill.

I remember a game about 25 years ago where a friend of one of the Halesworth branch keeled over just as they were climbing the steps to their seat. Never made it.

They were elderly and nothing much was made of it. Think it was St John's that tended to them before the ambulance took them away. Can't believe it was an event so rare no one in the thousands of attendees since knows of no one who was (un)lucky enough to spend their last moments at FPR.

I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.
Portman Road holds roughly the same number of people as the population of of Haverhill, and that a high proportion of those will be elderly or middle aged men, often with their blood pressure getting pushed up.

It might only be for a couple of hours, but that's happening up and down the country. That these medical emergencies are infrequent is a happy surprise for me.

My thoughts exactly.

Based on average attendances, there are about 850,000 people at a football match every Saturday of which, as you say, a good proportion will be of an ageing male demographic which will be more susceptible to certain illnesses/incidents.

Based on mortality averages, (1,190 per 100,000 males in 2021, or 448 per 100,000 for those under 75), you would expect there to be between about 3,800 and 10,150 deaths from that cohort each year.

As you point out, its surprising that the number of medical incidents at football matches isn't higher than it is.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

People never had heart attacks before, of course.

The best one was when Wigan's Charlie Wyke collapsed in training. Obviously not good that it happened, and thankfully he's made a full recovery, but seeing all the antivaxxers frothing at the mouths immediately and commenting all over the socials. Only for Wigan to later release a statement with his permission confirming he wasn't actually ever vaccinated against Covid.
