https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/feb/07/childrens-emergency-mental-healt

"Record numbers of children and young people are seeking help for mental health problems. In 2022 alone, 1.4 million were referred to child and adolescent mental health services (Camhs) for treatment of anxiety, depression, eating disorders and other psychological problems.

But as demand soars for children’s mental healthcare and support, Camhs teams are struggling to see or treat children quickly enough. Experts say that is leading to thousands of under-18s getting even sicker while on waiting lists, prompting a 53% rise in emergency and urgent referrals for Camhs crisis care.

An emergency referral is normally made if a child needs to be seen within 24 hours. They might be a risk to themselves due to suicidal feelings, have a significant health risk because of an illness such as anorexia or have another serious mental health condition, experts said."

A quick Google suggests that there are about 10 million 5 to 18 year olds in the UK so that is about 1 in 7 seeking help. Something is seriously wrong with the society we have created.

Purely by chance I have stumbled upon this film documenting some horse drawn travellers in 1995 and thought you might enjoy it.
I travelled with some similar folk in the late 1980's and my overwhelming memories are of laughter and positivity.

I see what you mean about these social media influencers presenting an edited glorified view of their lives.

That's rather soothing.

I wouldn't want to be a young adult now for all the tea in China. There was so much more space for choices and expression back then.

The rise of the 'influencer' is a huge issue. As you say, they present the very best edited and choreographed version of their 'life'.

Yeah. We've also become a society with a lot of junk values - materialism, 'success at all costs', needing cheap dopamine hits and validation (social media likes) etc. All of this reflected in
and perpetuated by influencers and grown ups in their lives who have been sucked into this too.

As far as worrying what you look like goes, this used to be more of an issue for girls and young women, but it is increasingly affecting boys and young men too. Gym culture and 'bulking' in a lot of instances is reaching an unhealthy, obsessive point.

Nobody trains parents for the job we end up with. Most parents do the best they can for their children and many actively seek help, advice and support but most (all?) of us fall short to some degree.

Schools do their best to provide the mental health support children need. There are full time pastoral support roles in all schools now and what they are dealing with is horrendous. Just hearing the tip of the iceberg in a role as a teacher is enough to harm my own mental health. Some of what children suffer is harrowing beyond imagination.

I am sure there are many reasons for an increase in mental health problems in society generally and amongst children especially. Ultimately a better funded health system and a better funded education system that isn't driven solely by academic league tables would go a long way to helping.

I don’t buy this argument about nobody is trained to be a parent, at all. With some tiny exceptions everyone knows everything they need to know about how to raise children; how to feed them right, bring them up right, clothe them, keep them clean, give them love and attention, don’t let them watch too much tv or have a phone very young etc etc.
Some people simply can’t be arsed and would rather stick them in front of a screen.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Are too many children relying on services but really they need their parents to be their rock?

Weak parents result in weak children… is that what you are saying? Probably some truth in that to be fair.
When mine come to me with idle tit for tat things that have happened in their day, I go for the whole ‘but does it really matter?’ We talk over the issue of course, but ultimately child X telling the teacher mine looked at her funny really isn’t an issue…

Got to be cruel to be kind at times, or as discussed, they turn a bit wet themselves

Installing a wicked sense of humour, and a decent amount of pisstaking is also key. Make them resilient.

A touch 'blousy' for my tastes, but definitely an improvement on the the 21st century!

Agreed...the anarcho punk ones were much more fun.

"Weak parents result in weak children… is that what you are saying?"
That would depend on your definition of a weak parent but I guess that probably isn't what they are saying.

As you can probably imagine Miss Slave and I are the absolute bollox as attentive, loving, engaged parents with very open communication with Junior whos middle name is resilient. Despite this her move to University has allowed the space for some largely suppressed, til now, voices to get stronger leading to her currently having a concerning diagnosis. To her credit she is facing her demons, has sought and will soon be receiving support. Suffice to say social media has played its part!

Despite our rather obvious differences at the moment Banksy, I'm very sorry to here about your daughter's issues. I hope she gets the help and support she needs.

And if our conversations regarding my own daughter's struggles are anything to go by, I know she has a very supportive and caring father.

Really sorry to hear about your daughter but pleased she is getting help. As this article I picked up this morning illustrates, many don't. I'll post the second part when it's released.

Seeing as how she is training to be a mental health nurse it would be almost criminally negligent not to wouldn't it!!

Will give the link a read later, looks interesting.

Not massively surprising when young healthy people were kept in isolation and lockdown for such an extended period of time. Their social development was essentially put on hold but time didn’t stop. Some of the most important developmental years and life interactions completely lost.
