Russell Martin post match quote on 22:50 - Apr 1 by pointofblue | I’m not sure what the rules are about bringing the league into disrepute by playing a weakened side. I remember fallout after Wolves fielded a weaker side against Manchester United in the Premier League, as they were facing Burnley a few days later. |
Wasn't that under Mick McCarthy? Obviously the point at Old Trafford wasn't a prisoner that year! Didn't they still lose to Burnley as well? I doubt any team would play a significantly weakened side for the final day. However, the motivation might be lacking if the result makes no difference to them. At the same time, the extra pressure of the result mattering does strange things to some teams too. We have seen our team cope with that already last season.

Seems to not be a thing now, as you can make 8-10 changes for cup games without a problem. I remember that particular case though (although not the details). I remember thinking it especially harsh at the time. A manager should be able to pick fro the whole of his squad, otherwise what's the point of declaring a squad? if a team does enough to secure promotion or a PO spot (or safety) with a game or two to go, I don't see why the fringe members can't get a run out. You're right about the pressure/lack of pressure. it does very strange things. It often seems to be relegated teams who suddenly play with a freedom and start getting results.

Russell Martin post match quote on 21:00 - Apr 1 by Ftnfwest | Quite right but we had 38 shots to 2 against Maidstone and no one said we deserved to win that. He’s a good coach and may well go on to do ok in the prem, but my god he moans about everything (so yes well suited to the prem for that alone) |
Fairly confident he is the reason Saints aren't in the top two. A coach who is somehow failing upwards, seemingly just because his teams pass the ball hundreds of times, given his league finishes have been 13th, 15th, 10th.

It was under McCarthy. They beat Burnley afterwards. The punishment was a £25k fine so not sure if Southampton would be too fussed about that! The big example of a team with nothing to play for somehow beating a side fighting for something was the 3-2 win over Leeds on the last day of 2018/19, which prevented them from winning automatic promotion. Think we finished with ten men as well.

Russell Martin post match quote on 22:54 - Apr 1 by Swansea_Blue | They were great while they had the energy. And then we took over and found a second gear. We've seen it so many times. There was only so long they could keep doubling up on us before they ran out of steam. I can't work out whether it's the drugs or the voodoo. Maybe it's bit of both |
This was purely Voodoo. Leif went down with cramp, surely drugs wouldn't have allowed that to happen surely! Unless the clubs employee voodoo specialist, picked up the Leif Davis doll by mistake. They done a good job with Bree and Bednarek though I have to say.
Russell Martin post match quote on 23:06 - Apr 1 with 362 views | Trequartista | I don't mind him having an opinion that his side were better, but in a separate interview he says the Southampton goals were all brilliant and the Ipswich goals were all rubbish, so that's the sort of childishness we're dealing with.

Russell Martin post match quote on 23:12 - Apr 1 with 317 views | tractorshark | Martin is summed up by his antics before each game when he goes over to the away fans and applauds them. Did it at Swansea as well. Just as cringy as Paul Cook. It’s just a ‘look at me’/ ‘please like me’ exercise. They probably did deserve to win but they didn’t. He can bleat on about moments but only one stat matters and that one has a 3 and a 2 in it.

They played some very good football and their second goal was fantastic. But they did not deserve to win.
