Strange places you have celebrated a goal on 07:11 - May 30 with 1389 views | Churchman | In the mid 70s I was staying in Germany over Easter. I had my little red radio and twiddled the dial and tuned in just in time to hear the warming tones of the great Peter Jones saying “Welcome to our World Service listeners, wherever you may be”. I got a real kick out of hearing that thinking there are people across the world listening, including me. Of course, it was a time where the only other way to find out scores was yesterday’s over priced paper. Anyhow, we won the game. I think it was against Arsenal. Proper, brilliant commentary. Jones and his chums would actually describe the game and make you feel like you were there. Happy memories.

Strange places you have celebrated a goal on 03:11 - May 30 by Battersea_Blue | Half of Soi 6 is “owned” by the Flowers guy, they have their own contracted security guys. The rest of the bars club together and have hired a 3rd party “company” to handle security. The altercation started in the bar with the staff there and the cashier when this drunk idiot refused to pay his bill (2,000 baht, about £48). He was rude and confrontational, one report saying he hit one of the bar girls but videos don’t show that. You can see the cashier calling the “security” company and quickly 3 heavies show up, all with black T-shirts with “Guard” emblazoned on them. It all kicked off, spread outside into the street and 2 of the Brits got a real kicking. The “guard“ with the bloody nose lost face because of that. One Brit was on the deck, semi conscious and that guard gave a running head kick. It was horrible, for sure could have killed him. The 3 “guards” were arrested as that’s not what Thailand wants the world to see. The Brits didn’t lodge a formal complaint, so no action was taken. The “guards” publicly apologised, so that’s the end of it. As they say, TIT (this is Thailand). Pattaya is actually a very safe place. Just don’t be a dick and don’t pick a scrap with a Thai because you’ll come 2nd. |
I'm surprised to hear about it kicking off in Pattaya. The average age of the punters is about 80 isn't it.

Haha . . not quite . . Dynamic has changed here quite a bit and places like Soi 6 and Walking St attract the two week millionaires rather than expats. The average age of expats is certainly in the 60ish range.

Not a place I liked when I went there. Prefer the islands like Phuket and Koh Samui. Though I did enjoy a visit to the wooden temple there. That was very impressive.

I live in Jomtien, about a 15 minute cab ride to central Pattaya. Much more laid back, decent beach and everything one could want within walking distance. I've heard good and very bad about Phuket, never been there. Koh Sumui and the islands are beautiful. Hua Hin is really nice, Bangkok has a great buzz and I like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in the north.

Phuket is good but Patong is very busy and popular with Russians now. Koh Samui is beautiful yeah. Particularly fishermans village area. At night it has a great atmosphere. Next time I want to explore the north more. North is supposed to be the "real" Thailand.

Strange places you have celebrated a goal on 05:22 - May 30 by Hong_Kong_Bluey | Right ok, this I want to know about............ How the hell do I not know about raves in Hong Kong!? Is it some kind of sub culture that old established residents like me don't get to hear about........ please tell me more In answer to the question.......... Sarmiento's 3rd vs Southampton. Not that weird, but I was watching on my laptop in Wetherspoons Heathrow just before I had to run to board the flight back home...... One of my happiest flights ever |
Yeh you gotta have some yung pals there to know what’s what. I’ll DM you a decent route in to some party crews. Love that the rave ups always seem to be 7th floor or above

Turns out people in the tent opposite were Barnsley fans with a car radio powerful enough to receive BBC radio commentary of the game. I have to say my celebratins were quite contained though, as the Barnsley lads were so decent, let me listen with them and provided me with beer.

Jomtien is certainly more chilled isn't it, I've stayed there a couple of times. I disagree about Koh Samui etc, I prefer the seedy side of Pattaya. Also, in Pattaya the people are mainly buddist and I found them more friendly than Koh Samui. Stayed in The Dusit on the top of the ring one year up Naklua way, I think that was my favourite time. Bangkok was too busy for me.

I loved Koh Sumui so much that I binned off my return flight and a 10 day trip turned into 2 months when I was 19. Partly because a mate of mine from Woodbridge arrived on about day 8 and twisted my arm, also partly cause I got some casual bar work & started getting with a beautiful Dutch girl and international chicks were novel when you’re that age and from rural Suffolk. Reluctantly returned home for my 2nd year at Uni but have some great memories, absolutely beautiful island and so much fun (this is 20 years ago nearly). Got some pills off a German kid one night, to this day don’t know what it was but that’s genuinely up there with the best nights ever.

Did you do the full moon party on Koh Phangnan? Both times I've been out, I've missed the date for it. Besides, I'm too much of an old fart these days to party all night.

I was in bangkok for a couple of days and wanted to go visit the royal palace. But I smoked a doobie and then was too stoned to work out the BTS train system lol so I just stayed where I was in Sukhumvit

Strange places you have celebrated a goal on 12:38 - May 30 with 956 views | Europablue | When England were playing Italy in the final of the last Euros I had to fly home from London City Airport (I didn't expect England to get to the final, or I wasn't thinking about it much because I was over in England for a funeral during the covid restrictions). I watched the first half on the airport wi-fi, celebrated our goal. Missed the second half, but was expecting that we probably lost. Got in a taxi home from the airport listening to the commentary of extra time, and got home just in time to see us lose on penalties.
