Statue for Mick Mills ? 10:05 - May 31 with 4097 viewskpblues

Slightly odd timing with all that's going on but I keep thinking it would be nice to do a statue of a legend while they are still alive so who better than Mick Mills?

He's number one in appearances.

Captain for the FACup and EUFA Cup (two of our three shirt stars).

Was also 1st Div runner-up 80–81, 81–82 and 2nd Div champion 1967–68.

Also the first Ipswich England captain and MBE to boot.

Still analyses the Ipswich games and does a lot of foundation work.

Wouldn't it be nice?

I think that's one too many really. Two great managers and one great player will do until KMc wins us the European Cup.

Something more like a bass-relief frieze in gold, with Micky Mills prominent (and very upright) on the walls of the massive new East Stand, Portman Road, with the rising sun highlighting the extraordinary posture of the man alongside the likes of Warky and Mariner, would be suitably god-like and daunting to those who dare to come here and challenge our might.

(I think I got a little carried away there, sry)

People gonna hate me but probably more reasons for having a statue then the Beat who also warranted a statue.

I agree, although i loved the beat, i consider mick mills more of an ipswich legend. Mick mills is probably 'the' ipswich legend in my 45 years as a fan

I don't remember Mills as a player, but when the Beattie statue was commissioned I thought why just him, why not Wark and Mills too? Wark is second in our appearances and goals records, and usually is rated 2nd in our greatest ever player polls!

If there was a famous photo of the 3 of them together that would have been ideal - like Man Utd have Best, Law and Charlton together, but I think it's too late now

Something a bit like this of the 81 side? Though not so extravagant, obviously

Think it's more to do with the fact that the Beat has been repeatedly been voted as the clubs best ever player.

As to how many statues we need - hopefully as many as success warrants.

Seriously, Mills and Wark are standouts, both as living representatives and as players whose achievements will probably never be surpassed. Not necessarily a statue, but something significant and long-lasting should be linked to them while we still have them.

I've always thought Mills should be acknowledged more in some way.

If not a statue, maybe a stand renaming.

No doubt about it, Mick Mills is a real ITFC legend. The problem is how many statues do you have before it gets silly. To be honest, most of that 1981 team are true legends, so where do we stop.

When he retires from doing the Suffolk commentary, id love to see the west stand named after him. He has done his commentary in that stand for many years on top of what he did as a player.

That Mills posture alone is statue worthy though to be fair.

I'm in the 'statues-are-naff' camp.

But it's a pity there are no songs about players of old, because that seems a much more vibrant way of paying tribute to the legends of the past. Liverpool still sing a song about Dalgleish, and maybe there are other clubs in England who do something similar. (I have an idea Arsenal fans still sing about Tony Adams, but I could be wrong. Did Town fans sing about Wark for some time after he'd retired?)

Celtic have the best song in this respect, (to the tune of 'Matchstick Men and Matchstick Cats and Dogs', but a lot brisker),- which in the chorus reels off the names of a whole load of Celtic greats, and mentions others in the verses. They still sing this song as a matter of course.

[chorus]
And they gave us James McGrory and Paul McStay,
They gave us Johnstone, Tully, Murdoch, Auld and Hay,
And most of the football greats,
Have passed through Parkhead’s gates,
All to play football the Glasgow Celtic way.

(The writers were blessed to have two great players whose names rhyme! I can't think of a Town equivalent pair.)

But of course 'spontaneously' making up a new song and then actually getting it to stick is very very difficult.

Go with that. Let’s go full Rome! Worked well for them - well until the 5th century anyway.

Perhaps have them on wheels with a motor inside. Imagine when we next play our Norwich friends, Delia and hubbykins being chased down the road by statues of Wark, Mariner, Burley, Crawford, Phillips, Nelson (the two armed one), Stockwell, Matt Holland, Allan Hunter, Tommy Parker, Bryan Gunn doing the air kick (funniest football moment ever) and co.

I’d add Gates, Sivell and Jay Tabb, but nobody would spot them. They’d welcome the terror of an empty beer can.

Statues? The more the merrier!
