Retained list thread had me looking at our squad 20:13 - May 31 with 11635 views_clive_baker_

Safe to assume all of the following are off, in one form or another? Ball, Camara, Jackson, Donacien, Williams, Travis, Hutchinson, Sarmiento, Aluko, Moore, Ndaba, El-Mizouni, Hayes.

That’s 13. Presumably Ladapo too if we can find a home for him, although that won’t be cheap and I would expect we’ll have to contribute most of his wages / bridge any gap. Ahadme & Baggott presumably out on loans or moved on too.

Quite a lot innit, and that’s before question marks around a few others, namely in the keeper department. Excluding keepers that leaves 16 by my reckoning, including Humphreys, Edmundson, Harness & Al-Hamadi who you might argue won’t all be in the squad.

We’ll bring in at least 6 or 7 won’t we?

8-10 in for me to impact the first team squad. Would imagine something like 2 x £20m, 2 x £10-£15m, 2 x 0-£10m, 2/3 loans (including one from abroad) and a free transfer or two.

I hope we use this opportunity sign a couple of prospects as well that we can loan out to a Championship club. Would be the perfect time to sign Charlie Hughes for example, who we have been tracking for a while.

I think I read somewhere that Luton spent about £20M and Burnley £100M. Somebody on here yesterday said that we are going to spend around £90M. (which Phil kind of agreed with) If the bulk of that is on 4 starters then great, with the rest spent on £1-3M players for the squad. One of the main reasons we are where we are is because of the togetherness of this squad. I worry it may be upset with to many new arrivals expecting to be in the starting X1.

There’s a finer line these days between starting 11 and squad these days though and KM usually uses 16 players on the pitch every game with 5 subs used. It’s almost more like a playing 16 rather than a starting 11.

We signed 11 first team players last season, and 13 the season before. Why would we suddenly bring in less now when we have a bigger gap to bridge, and more money available to do so?

Why are you counting January transfers to make your point when we’re discussing the summer transfer window, not the winter one?

I think the answer is 7-8.

25 man squad including probably 2 players for every position and a third keeper and an extra couple of attackers

GK

Hladky (new contract)
Walton (or replace)
Slicker

RB/CB hybrid

Clarke
Axel

CB

Woolfie
Burgess
Fridge
New signing (maybe Edwards from Posh)

LB/LW hybrid

Davis
New signing (maybe Sessegnon)

DCM

Morsy
New signing (maybe Sheaf)

CM

Luongo
New signing (maybe Ekwah)

RW

Burns
New signing (????)

10’s

Chappers
Broadhead
Taylor
New signing (Omari no question mark!)
New signing (Sarmiento?)

9’s

Hirst
New signing (????)
Ali

Think that’s 7 and maybe 8 if Walton goes

Actually it’s 8/9
[Post edited 1 Jun 2024 8:37]

Agreed. 7 - 8 feels about right.

Too many. KM won’t disrupt the squad that much straight away.

Agree. He didn't tinker with the team too much when we went up last season. I'd like to see a 2 phased approach - maybe 3 or 4 good quality additions over the summer - that would include Hutchinson if we can get him back. Then maybe another couple in January depending on where we are.

I kind of admire Luton's attitude to last season. It's different. They came across like ahhhh odds are against us, we'll try but let's use the money for something useful long-term like infrastructure instead.

Who’s saying we’ll rip the starting 11 up? We need reinforcements, and quality, if we’ve any chance of staying in this division.

As I’ve said so many times, Luton kept the bulk of their promotion squad together last summer, and still signed 13 players.

If you think we’re only going to sign a few players, I think you’ll be in for a shock (just my opinion of course).

I think it’ll target the spine of the team, so that’d be about 4-5 players. We need pace through that team in every sector, Attack, midfield and defence, we’re too slow atm I feel.

I think Jackson will stay, McKenna in the extended interview was full of praise for the way he stepped up in January. I think he has the manager's complete trust if he needs to be called upon to fill a gap.

His comment on Jackson's performance in the Stoke was particularly interesting. I also thought Jackson had a good game, but he got totally slaughtered on TWTD.

Im not sure Luton are a good example given they were relegated. They took 5pts from their opening 10 games. A better start would have seen them stay up so it’s all about balance.

Historically under KM we’ve been weakest over the winter period so we need a decent start imo. Balance is key. We don’t want to disrupt the consistency and fluidity but need to augment with real quality.

I think we sign somewhere between 7-10 players. If they are all in the £5-20M bracket, I would be expecting most to start. I know we are going to spend and reinforcements are needed, but it worries me that those who got us there, may not be given the chance to keep us there. These lads have earnt that right.

No, they’ve earnt no right to start or indeed to play at all. Only one or two of them would have been signed by another Premier League team. It all starts again, for everyone. There can be no sentimentality.

What they have is an amazing chance to play at a level beyond their dreams. And, if they do step up, to be even greater legends than they already are.

Ok, we signed 7 first team players last Summer, and 9 the Summer before. Why would we suddenly bring in less now when we have a bigger gap to bridge, and more money available to do so?

ps. Might have been easier to just acknowledge the numbers originally posted weren’t that wild, rather than this bizarre gotcha attempt

By my reckoning, being generous, we only have 18 first team players (as below) for next season. So at a complete minimum we are looking at 7 signings. If Harness, Edmundson, Al-Hamadi (loan) and Walton went it really wouldn't surprise me. So could be up to 11.

Walton
Hladky
Slicker

Clarke
Davis
Tuanzebe
Burgess
Woolfenden
Edmundson

Morsy
Taylor
Luongo

Harness
Chaplin
Broadhead
Burns

Hirst
Al-Hamadi

Or more to the point nobody in their wildest dreams would’ve expected to get 2 promotions in the space of his contract. And in doing so him being on that sort of money for a year is a small price to pay. Did contribute a lot in L1, and a little last season to be fair. Would be quite a story if he played some sort of role in the premier league. Won’t happen but scenes if he does.

This isn't me being outright critical but I struggle to see any scenario in any game where Ladapo's work rate is deemed good enough in the Premier League.

Hardly a bizarre gotcha attempt when you’re inflating numbers to be misleading. I’ve said we need to sign 7 or 8 players which you’re agreeing is in line with how KM has typically conducted his summer business.

We need more quality but we’re also playing 9 less games over a fractionally longer season, all by a measly week but 9 games is significant.

Which 20 would you say are certain to remain?

It would take all 16 players who were registered and still in contract to remain, plus Slicker, Al, Hamadi and Baggott to be registered and one of the out of contract players to stay (Jackson?) to get to 20

I didn’t inflate anything, I just looked at the number we’d signed the last 2 years. You made a fair point about the discussion being around the Summer window but it doesn’t change the fact that we’ve still brought in a lot of players the past 2 Summers, with this season representing a bigger jump and shift in financial muscle

Your 7-8 comment came after the above exchange, which was in response to you saying 8-10 was too many, itself an odd response when your own prediction includes an 8. It’s almost like you’ve realised we will indeed sign quite a few players and shifting the goalposts, rather than just admitting that posters prediction wasn’t that wild after all)

So you would do a Nottingham Forest and sign 29 players in 1 window?
Not sure that is a good way to approach it. I think most agree between 7-10 in would be a good number. I don't want them all to be starters ahead of what we already have. If you don't think they have earnt that right, then that is your opinion of course, but I disagree. 4 new starters I can live with, but a completely new starting X1 would be crazy.

Ladapo is 31 & has 1 year left on his contract. I reckon he's on about 14k a week. He was a late developer who proved himself to be a good League 1 striker over the past few years. He could end up back at Rotherham or at the likes of Birmingham. We're unlikely to get a fee for him, but a decent League 1 club might want him (though not Charlton) or else we'll have to loan him out, although we might avoid a pay off if someone will give him a 2 or 3 year deal.
