Transfers this summer, how many? State of Squad. 12:34 - Jun 3 with 11491 viewsitfcjoe

My view on squad currently with retained list well overdue - i.e. which over 21 players will be here next season and offered a deal

GK (3)
Hladky, Walton, Slicker

FBs (3)
Davis, Tuanzebe, Clarke

CBs (5)
Burgess, Woolfenden, Edmundson, Ndaba, Baggott

CMs (4+1)
Morsy, Taylor, Luongo, El Mizouni, (Humphreys U21)

FWs (4/5)
Burns, Chaplin, Broadhead, Harness, (Jackson - contract status not announced)

STs (4)
Hirst, Al-Hamadi, Ladapo, Ahadme

Total of 23 senior players plus Kayden Jackson (unsure) and Cameron Humphreys (U21)

Think it's fairly safe to say the following players will be heading out on loan again, or sold for a fee/mutually terminated (i.e. weren't close to being good enough for us last season)

Elkan Baggott, Corrie Ndaba, Idris El Mizouni, Freddie Ladapo and Gassan Ahadme

If we then exclude Jackson from this, it leaves us with 18 senior players, so for me transfer business this summer looks like this:

Additions
- 7 new signings to fill the gaps to take us to 25 men

Senior players departing (3)
- Walton, Edmundson and Harness at most risk of going as not regular starters
- If any of these leave it will see them replaced on a 'one in-one out' nightclub door policy

Further loans (2)
- Slicker and Al-Hamadi may be ones to go out on loan
- As above if this happens it will be the nightclub door policy

Other points of interest
- Cam Humphreys may be retained as 26th man as still an U21
- Kayden Jackson may get a new deal and then one less addition
- Does Jack Taylor fall into one of the above 2 categories when looking at game time last year?

Overall view
- 7 new signings, with potential for up to 5 more
- The '5 more' may be split across the summer and January transfer windows

Def Info - We’re on the lookout for another keeper. Not likely to be first choice but think one of Walton or Slicker will be replaced

Surprises me, I think this is an area we need to improve. Vas decent with his feet but has had a few dodgy moments as well.

Any names so we can see the profile?

My guess is a new number 1 to compete with Vas, and then try and get Slicker a loan spell and have an old head number 3

I think we could see a bit of player trading come into play, and a surprise departure in a swap deal.

Someone that would be a big draw if a championship team are to lose a big player to us.

This just a thought mate, or def info? - seems rather specific for it to be just a thought?

Unless he was super cheap I'd be disappointed if we signed Sarmiento. I know he scored some important goals last year and rightly we can look back fondly on that time, but he didn't look 'enough' for me over his whole loan, and his wastefulness in the danger areas won't cut it in the PL

I thought he got better and better as the season went on. He was a few months behind Hutchinson in terms of time with McKenna. He's only 21 too. Be a great signing on a permanent for me. As one of the two loan spots we have, it may be slightly harder.

Just a thought…

But it kind of makes logical sense in my head. This lad from Coventry for example, if we could offer a player plus cash, we’ll be getting an upgrade on a player, not taking up an extra spot in the squad, and spending less/saving on wages.

Think the player we need to be most worried about losing is Woolf, which would give us a huge transfer benefit if it happened for a stonking fee.

I can't see anyone offering us silly money for him tbh. Maybe if he has a stellar season in the premier league then at 26 and English it then wouldn't surprise me, but right now I think its unlikely.

He's a strange one really, its hard to know where his ceiling might be. I think it was Chambers who once said he's the sort of player than can play at any level and not look out of place and I can see what he means. Strikes me as someone who could be a 7 out of 10 in the premier league and the same in L2 sort of guy, very consistent and reads the game well, without you ever coming away from a game giving him the MOTM or often even in that discussion.

You don't see enough swap deals nowadays, I love a swap deal.

Sedgley / Venus with Wolves vibes.

Anderson/Emmanuel-Thomas, was technically the last one wasn't it? Although it didn't go through as a 'swap deal' as such, IIRC?

Marcus Harness is a Coventry fan I believe. Straight swap for Sheaf seems fair.

That counts in my book.

Guess they're more complex deals to do, like a chain in a house sale. I'd love to see a naughty little Ben Sheaf for cash + Walton deal.

Thought he looked electric after the 2 week break for the final 3 games - the first time he'd had a proper training chunk with McK as was pretty full on for the run in before that and when we did have a break he was away with Ecuador

I'd love to sign him, Martijn Reuser like for me

I think Jackson will get a new deal, McKenna really likes him, I think he's a positive influence amongst the squad, and I could see him getting enough games in the cups and maybe here and there off the bench in the league that he will be happy with sticking around for one more year, even if he doesn't really feature often.

I think unless we get a huge offer for Davis or receive another too good to turn down offer for anyone, it will be 4 or 5 new permanent signings, and then 2 loans, with only the obvious players you mention departing.

I also said this in another thread, but I wouldn't be certain that McKenna feels the need to fill the 25 man squad this summer, 24 or maybe even 23 would likely be workable given the fact we will be playing less games, plus it allows more flexibility in January to make 2 or 3 more additions once McKenna has assessed how players are doing with the step up.

Yeah I agree. Wonder if he might be available permanently this summer. Seems to be behind Adingra, Enciso and Buonanotte with the latter two being younger than him.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Sarmiento sign permanently this summer. Think it'd be a good bit of business all round.

To be fair it's not exciting or sexy to keep him, but there's some merit in it. I'm not his biggest fan, he's quite clearly not a premier league player, but if you want someone who's likely to be your 24th / 25th squad player, versatile, we know he has a good attitude and applies himself in the right way, will be happy with that role (potentially), cheap, not going to upset the apple cart and create too much change in a short space of time etc, then its a very difficult one to fill externally. A 1 year extension for Jackson does have some merit IMO.

I think Harness can play that role in the squad, and is contracted for next season....so reality is pay off Harness, or pay some of his wages for him to go out on loan and pay Jackson on top of this, or just let Harness do that role for a season.

If their contract situations were reserved then I couldn't see us making any attempt to keep Harness at Jackson's expense and now vice versa

Quite possibly. I see it as:

In: Davis, Woolfenden, Morsy, Burns, Chaplin, Broadhead, Hirst, Hladky, Burgess, Clarke, Luongo, Taylor, Tuanzebe.

I would be surprised if any of those 13 aren't in the squad next season, that bit is very easy.

More difficult squad options: Edmundson, Jackson, Humphreys, Walton, Harness, AAH, Slicker.

I think 3 - 5 of the above 7 stick around. That's really all it comes down to IMO by way of decisions.

Easy ones then are Ball, Aluko, JD, Camara, Ahadme, Ladapo, El-Miz, Ndaba, Baggott. None will be in our squad.

His energy and tenacity got us through Coventry away. I love that bit of fire he has to get stuck in and put in a big tackle, like I say, really helped us at Coventry is just 1 example.
