I suppose we will see the usual parade of royals wearing medals they haven't earned & uniforms they are only entitled as a result of being given a titular title such as "colonel in chief".
Yes, I do know that Harry & Andrew have seen combat, but I doubt either of them will be in evidence.

Why do you need a President? PM as head of state will be perfectly fine.

You clearly haven't seen any of Adam Sandler's movies.

Point taken.

The country would lose a great deal of money if the monarchy were abolished. People from many countries love the whole idea of our Royal Family, Americans above all. Even if a President lived at Buckingham Palace it would not attract people to come to the UK for their holiday.

This may seem illogical and silly but it would still be so!

When did I say this little fella?

Well, you always promote him to the role every time the topic pops up, surely a fan boy.

You do know everything said on here isn’t entirely serious, big bird.

You can't be a member of the UN without having a head of state.

That makes 3 of the direct family. Maybe we should have expected Princess Anne to have joined 2 para.

Household Cavalry surely? All the carrots and sugar lumps she can eat, and she still gets to sh!t where she likes.

I think you nominally need someone above with some executive powers in case that pm gives himself dictatorial powers for instance. Checks and balances, like

Like when the Prime Minister illegally prorogued Parliament and Betty bottled it, you mean?

That was the moment I lost my nominal support for the Royals. The Head of State was supposed to be the last of the Checks and Balances.

Does it not worry anyone else that the army regularly practices military manoeuvres in the centre of London close to the Houses of Parliament?

Would be ideal cover if they were planning a coup

Could they do any worse than this current crop of politicians (all parties) ?

If Charles isn't doing a full braveheart speech while daubed in blue paint I'm refusing to go over the top

Probably because the film is historically inaccurate and the Scots didn’t wear face paint.

Go back a few hundred years and the Picts are thought to have daubed woad on their naked bodies.

Back to Trooping the Colour and Charles’ medals, the former gets a thumbs up from me, the medals - ceremonial, honorific, earned; all fine by me. He is after all head of state.

I am a Parliamentarian/New Model Army/Roundhead/Republican but while we have the monarchy, military traditions like this are for me a good thing.

As for Charles, he looks seriously unwell to me so I’m not surprised things he might be interested in like ‘green issues’ have not progressed as much as he’d like.

Argh, historians say lots of stuff, unless I see photographic evidence otherwise I'm taking Braveheart at face value.

Despite my Scottish heritage, I've never seen or wanted to see Braveheart for just the reason you mention. The awful accent didn't help either.

And when it comes to the Picts, the name itself is derived from the Latin "pictus" meaning painted.

See we were border line stereotyping an entire country, now we are just carefully and respectably discussing their cultural norms.

Here are some of Braveheart’s inaccuracies from The Scotsman.

https://www.scotsman.com/heritage-and-retro/heritage/10-braveheart-inaccuracies-

He was betrayed by a Scottish nobleman called John Mentieth. He received a fair trial in the Great Hall, where he was not allowed to offer a defence, not that he recognised his accusers.

He was butchered in 1305 at Smithfield Market and I doubt he said ‘Freedom’ after what was done to him. His head was dipped in tar and displayed on a pole on London Bridge. The nearest he got to face painting.

A memorial to William Wallace was placed in Smithfield Square as recently as 1956.
Yes, Braveheart was riddled with inaccuracies, but that's Hollywood for you & I still found it an enjoyable film.

It was well made, but like Titanic the inaccuracies really annoyed me.

I get with film making you have to take a few liberties to make the film work, but to drift it away as Braveheart, Titanic and the Kate Beckinsale Pearl Harbour did destroys it for me.

Films like Apollo 13 and even Zulu - fine.
