Said Ipswich have killed him and Derby with getting promotion back to back and the expectations that Derby fans now have.

Ipswich spent a good amount of money and had a really good budget in the Championship.

Derby saying we spent a good amount of money?

I will say it over and over, our spend when GC20 came on board could easily have been spread over many seasons vs what other teams were spending. We had to repair the very deep cracks.

All in all, when you look at many other teams - we spent very little over the last 2 years, that is to say - out of the teams looking for promotion.

We spent as much as the rest of L1 combined.

But last season was remarkable.

Will be interesting to see how Birmingham get on with their new manager. If they invest heavily while they're in League One they could make a good go of it if they go up.

If Derby fans have that expectation, then that is their fault, not ours. It would seem to be down to a sense of entitlement that our fans never had.

The evidence from last season is this: three teams had come up from League 1. Two of those only just stayed up. That should be Derby's aim and they can build from there.

Overspending in order to achieve more than that has never really been their friend, now, has it?

Bookies odds seem to have them mid table next season which you’d think they’d take at this point.

I think our squad is light years ahead of where they’ll start from. I’m surprised nobody else has folllowed the ‘building a competitive Championship team whilst in League One’ model. Guess Derby don’t have the finances, but wouldn’t be surprised to see Brum try to emulate what we did.

Re your first line - only because we'd spent b*gger all over the last several years of Evan's reign, so had a lot of catching up to do. Seem to remember Derby themselves being regularly slated on here for their overspending, ie gambling in their desperate pursuit of promotion.

He and the Derby fans should be just grateful they still have a club.

They could and should have been liquidated not so long ago.

Not sure we had a really good budget, I'd say midtable on wage spend and probably similar on transfer spend. We only spent about £3m in the summer I think, which isn't exactly huge money. Plenty of sides were spending more than that on individual players.

We had a huge advantage on most of the teams in League One. We spent a lot, but we also did very well in the market and sold players for good sums. Because of our support base and income, it wasn't remarkable that we got promoted from League One, but the way we did it was remarkable considering the same club struggled in League One for years.
What we did in the Championship last year was remarkable, but staying up wasn't remarkable because we're nowhere near the bottom three with our spending.

We weren't expecting automatic promotion, but we were expecting top half and perhaps to be in contention for the playoffs. Derby fans should have similar expectations.

We all hear things differently, but when I heard that live that's not how I understood those comments.
Danny Murphy asked Warne if Ipswich winning promotion twice has that changed fans expectations and Warne replied he has joked with Kieran, him winning promotion twice its killed them all, as all fans of L1 teams will expect back to back promotions. He even said he would even text Kieran after the interview.

It was the Danny Murphy who said 'but Ipswich had a massive budget in L1'. Which to be fair that is correct.
Warne replied, yes they did and they were able to buy championship quality players. But he also added the owners have also done loads of other good things to improve the club

The context is absolutely essential. When presented out of context it looks as if he just came out with those comments from nowhere. I thought he sounded absolutely reasonable, and he wasn't trying to score points or downplay KM's achievement.

Devil's advocate (even though Warne is a scummer), but he doesn't say we had a good budget in the championship does he? Not explicitly at least. He seems to be directly comparing Ipswich and Derby's budgets for the most part. He says Ipswich had a bigger budget and they had a bigger budget than people realise (which is true IMO). If you just look at Ipswich vs Derby, he has somewhat of a point.

We had a ridiculously good budget in League 1. I think we had among the highest wage bills ever seen in League one history. For reference that was bigger than Coventry's championship wage bill for the same year. Still a distinctly lower end championship budget, but a championship budget. However Derby only spend slightly less than us. Perhaps some is legacy of championship players not off the wage bill yet and being overpayed, but it's not that much different to us.

Our spending on players though, was greater than all 23 other clubs combined and totalled £8m. This is where I think people have a point. We spent more than 5 times what our nearest rivals did on players, about 8 times the next two teams and 10 times the next two teams. That let us pick and choose players ready for the championship in a way our rivals couldn't and I think was a huge impact. We were in a position where we could not only match any team in league one for wages, we could blow them out the water in transfer fees.

Did it work? Hell yeah, we signed Leif Davis for £1.5m (approx. obviously don't know exact numbers) which is a greater outlay than any other team in the league's total spend. We were able to go out in January and pick up Harry Clarke and Broadhead, again probably for bigger fees than any team paid for all their signings.

If you are trying to compare Derby and Ipswich, Warne has a very valid point when it comes to transfer fees. No other club in League 1 was able to pay the fees we were paying for one player, let alone drop that multiple times

The Championship campaign though is nothing short of miraculous. I think when the numbers come out we will have had a midtable wage budget and lower midtable transfer spend. However we outperformed that so resoundingly that it goes down as one of the best ever championship campaigns.

That doesn't seem to account for player sales though, does it?

No, it's transfer spend. Derby seem to have made a profit of £1.6m on player sales in this time (with zero spend).

We meanwhile generated £2.7m on the same period in League 1.

Which means they would have made £1.6m from transfers with no new transfers in, while we made £2.7m and spend £8m. Still a significant difference.

Also worth noting that Derby accounts are for 13 months, not 12. So their wages are overstated compared to Towns.
