Jocks on the lash 08:00 - Jun 13 with 12296 views | bluelagos | Reported 200k Scotland fans descending on Munich for the opener tommorow. That's ridiculous numbers given they are not realistically going to win the Euros.

Jocks on the lash on 12:32 - Jun 14 by noggin | When did fans of their national team last cause any trouble? |
Well considering there has already been violence in Munich involving the scots, i would say about 6 hours ago...

Jocks on the lash on 12:25 - Jun 14 by quirkie | For the Jocks the prize is getting to the KO stage, this is their 12th major tournament and they've not managed it yet. They also know how to party properly unlike the Engerlund mob. |
It was Scotland's misfortune to be at their best in the 1970s when there were only 16 teams, making progress that bit more difficult. Indeed, in 1974 they were one of only six seeded teams but failed to qualify when four teams ended up on 4 points.

It’s a 50% chance it was! (But you’d automatically assume it was the fault of the English fans had the same statement been made about their involvement)

Jocks on the lash on 08:44 - Jun 14 by DJR | I think the issue is that, whilst the vast majority these days are not like that, England has had, and still has to an extent, an element of its support which is of the racist "football lads" type and who don't really like foreigners. But it it infinitely better than the 1980s because attending (not as a fan) England games at Wembley then was rather like attending a National Front rally. My understanding is that Rangers have a similar element of their support (what with the Union Jacks etc), but fortunately such people don't follow the Scottish national team. There's an element of self-fulfilling prophecy about it, though. My first ever proper job was at a national newspaper and I was there when Euro 2004 was on. We were watching the trouble between England and German fans on TV - throwing of chairs/bottles etc outside a bar. The editor asked me to call up the two reporters we had out in Portugal, which I did. Turns out they were inside the bar on the TV. They told me that the German fans had come over and started throwing the chairs at the windows and trying to start fights. Our guys were inside with the England fans and while a few had gone outside to "give it back," the vast majority were inside trying not to get their heads caved in. I told the editor, who said: "Nobody wants to hear about England fans being the victims, unfortunately." We ran with some kind of headline about English hooligans running amok again. Trouble is that it not only makes our own reputation worse, it also makes young England fans think "this is what we're supposed to do" and becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Not saying it's always like that and we're always the victims at all, but that day opened my eyes to what it can be like.

Think I would rather the Germans won, but really couldn't give a toss about this one. The only time during the tournament I won't be watching a game.

Equally, I know someone who was in Marseille when England played Russia. As ever, there were a few England fans who like to rearrange the seating arrangements, but most were trying to keep out of the way while seriously 'roided up Russians were on the hunt for anyone English to beat them to a pulp.

Jocks on the lash on 20:57 - Jun 13 by BloomBlue | There was, and maybe still is, a story that after Celtic's European cup victory in 1967, hundreds of fans who travelled with only enough money to get there decided they might as well stay in Lisbon/ Portugal and never returned back to Scotland. I think the story gained legs because there is a big Scottish community in Portugal and probably people put 2&2 together and came up with 5 |
Equally, there's a fair number of England cricket fans who never returned from Australia following the 2010-11 series down under.

Jocks on the lash on 18:02 - Jun 13 by GlasgowBlue | You have to differentiate between Scottish fans who follow the national team and scottish fans who follow the old firm. Old firm fans can behave absolutely appalling, as we witnessed in Manchester. Fans who follow the national teams tend to be made up from outwith the old firm. Rangers fans have a bigger allegiance to England and Celtic fans have an allegiance to the ROI. |
Have an uppie for the use of "outwith". Good work GB
