Much worse than the performance on the pitch 10:19 - Jun 17 with 4199 viewsDyland

Mowbray and Shearer made a good fist of making Matterface, Tyldesley et al seem competent. A worse pairing I cannot imagine. They were absolutely awful. Mowbray seems to have turned into Alan Partidge and Shearer is so biased and blinkered it's untrue. I don't mind Shearer as a pundit, though he's not great, but as a commentator he is unequivocally rubbish.

Yeah, Shearer was awful. Every time it was mentioned that Kane hadn't touched the ball his response was "it doesn't matter, he only needs that one touch", which is primary school level football insight and shut down any discussion of how unsuccessful we were in bringing him into the game. His insistence we needed to take the sting out of the game was irritating as well, we needed to up our tempo and get some control, not be even more passive.

It was ever thus though. The vast majority of commentators and sidekicks are rubbish. I shuddered when on Saturday on itv they announced a pairing of Tyldesley and Townsend. Andros, whilst a little dull was fortunately not quite as hackneyed as Andy, who used to make my blood boil. Shearer is crap but no worse than, for example, Lawrenson ever was or Jenas is. They all deal in the same tired old clichés. Football just doesn’t have good commentators in the way that, say, cricket does, mind you without the likes of Benaud, Holding, Bumble etc, it’s not what it was either

McCoist is absolutely brilliant and can make any old dross seem interesting and exciting.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

I did mean to add that Ally McCoist is the only exception currently. He’s entertaining and pretty insightful

When McCoist first came on the commentary I did think he was good.

However now, especially when he's with "Fletch", They seem to act like school boys. Also his constant use of "unbelievable", "out of this world".

Back on the OP subject, Shearer was awful. He should stick tot he studio where I can avoid him!

EDIT: I know I'm in the minority about McCoist!

Add to that the fella who was doing the main commentary (that's Mowbray I guess) somehow couldn't see that the keeper pushed Kane's header onto the bar, or that a foul was given for high feet/studs up rather than handball in the middle. He corrected himself for both after replays, but you'd think any competent observer/commentator should instinctively be able to see those things at first glance.

I know none of that is particularly important but I've bruised myself in an inconvenient location* this morning and I'm not in a particularly good mood.

To be fair, I didn't see it was a save by the 'keeper from Kane's header at first viewing, I thought he just got under it slightly as it was moving pretty fast.

Matterface is awful , as bad as Jonathan Pearce . Fabregas was good in the studio last night though .

Once again Rugby coverage knocks spots off football commentating - they know what they are talking about , they don't sensationalise it and have excellent back up from their co-commentators . Austin Healey is great .

If we are broadening this to other sports....

I like Chris Jones on 5 Live as a pundit, and really enjoy the bbc rugby podcast, but his radio commentary is awful - generally you have no idea what is going on if you just listen to him - he just goes on about the implications of the game, not what is actually happening. He is often saved by the co-comms.

Golf commentators are universally super annoying - I never got the Peter Allis love in, and dont get me started on their clubby version of our language

The commentators I think really earn their corn are those that commentate on tennis on the radio - now they are amazing, and they go on for hours!

The problem with all of the co-commentators are they’re all ex players. The problem with that is they still have relationships with clubs, ex-players and current players, therefore they won’t say what’s on their minds, they’ll protect those relationships and be both pc and careful not to pee those friends and contacts off.

That’s the same with studio pundits.

For me, Rio isn’t too bad and Keane at least says it how he sees it, even though he’s controversial at times.

Shearer never really says anything different or of interest, same with Micha Richard’s.

I’d put Alan Hansen up there with the best pundits, God bless him and hope he can pull through whatever his health issue is.

Best thing to do is watch it in a crowded pub, where it's so noisy you can never hear the commentators.

I really like McCoist but just adding he gets paid a lot of money to repeatedly say 'You've got to hit the target from there!"

Personally, I like Jonathan Pearce for his enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge. He was very shouty when he first transferred from radio to TV but obviously took advice on that.
