Glass Safety Panel Upper Cobbold Stand - Does Anyone Else Have Concerns? 16:51 - Jun 25 with 8236 viewsthegrandfleet

We’re a group of 7 friends who are season ticket holders and sit together in Row A & B, Block B, Upper Cobbold and have done so for over 20 years. We will be very much affected by the placing of a glass safety panel. We feel that this panel will obstruct our sight lines of the game greatly. We would be interested to know if other supporters are equally concerned about this unsightly, unwelcome and unwarranted step by the club…. we understand it’s to deter another ‘Maidstone type jumper’.

We are currently in dialogue with the club, both verbally but mainly via email. We would urge and encourage any supporters who have similar concerns and objections to this safety panel to express their thoughts and questions to the club, if they haven’t already done so of course.

Our contact is Neil McCluskey, Safety Officer ITFC, with whom we’re endeavouring to work with in proactive and constructive way in finding a more acceptable solution to this issue. Please feel free to share any comments or engagements you may have had with the club about the glass safety panel being installed along the front of Upper Cobbold.

We have seen many incidents over the years because of the poor configuration. I am shocked it has taken this long to do anything. I can remember fans from; Millwall, Leicester, Arsenal, Portsmouth, Norwich, West Ham and Spurs. All running on the roof of the boxes and jumping down to the lower tier.

I recall Pompey, Norwich, and Leicester jumping on top of boxes. And Milwall running around a half empty Cobbold lobbing seats down below. Don’t recall any of them jumping down into the Lower tier.

Football’s moved on anyways. Japanese tourists and other happy clappers aren’t going to be getting rowdy. And fans who want to cause trouble aren’t going to be stopped by Perspex.

And in 50 years of existence, how many fans have “fallen” from top tier to lower tier. The one drunken Maidstone tw@t doesn’t count. How many others?

In the same time frame, how many fans have died drinking caustic soda at Portman Road?
What are we going to do next? Stop fans drinking caustic soda?

Health and safety has moved on too. Can you imagine how much trouble the club would get into if someone else falls from that roof after what happened in the Maidstone game? Yes, I know the guy was just a drunken bellend but if the club are seen to do nothing after a warning shot like that and someone gets hurt they would have the book thrown at them. They are quite-rightly just covering themselves, as is the way of the world now.

The all slid down the box roofs and fought with Town fans on the lower tier. Milwall had proper go of it when we held them to a draw, ripping seats out and fighting on both tiers. Hopefully we find out about a new stand soon and fans displaced or inconvenienced get offered seats in a new Cobbold soon.

Well aware Its not my place of all people to say anything. But I do like to share my thoughts.

So. Personally. Anyone with an issue about safety measures being put in place should really grow up a tad.

You'll still see the game. It's no way similar to sitting behind a roof pillar it's safety glass ffs.

If it saves a life then brilliant. If it saves an injury great. It's a piece of see through material to enhance safety whilst insuring you continue to enjoy the game you love.

People who get their high horse about so called safety measures are the people that I have issue with. Who are these self-serving safety experts who put these measures in with no concern for any adverse effects or even any concerns about cost. They just evoke the word "safety" and everyone nods their heads and says what a good thing....The stand has been in place for over 50 years and there has never been any problem, except for when idiots behave idiotically. Are we having to cover any eventuality and make others suffer just because one time a drunken moron was stupid? If I was sitting behind it I'd be mightily p'ed off. Are we putting glass in front of all the upper tiers? Why not?
The term "health and safety gone mad" has never been more appropriate.

Suffer. Really? It's a bit of safety glass that can be seen through. You make it sound like a chicken wire being put up across the stand.

Again. What has happend or not happened isn't important It's what could happen. The fact however that 1 specific person did in fall and various others used the exec boxes as a slide, its not surprising and very welcoming to see the club take preventative action to stop it happening again.

It does make me laugh when some belittle safety measures like they are put in place for no reason. There will always be a reason and rightly so.

There could be plans to put screens up around the ground we don't know yet. It would be welcome if needed. However I'm sure each stand has its own risk assessments undertaken and action taken place accordingly.

I know I wouldn't be happy if it was my seat there.

One plonker takes a spill and everyone else gets punished.

Not for this safetyism at all.

I get that aspect but let’s be clear, the Maidstone fan did not fall. He drunkenly and purposely propelled himself down to the lower tier.

As I recall, the fighting with Milwall was outside the ground, and all they did inside was lob seats. But 1996 was a long time ago, my memory is not great and if you were in the Cobbold (I was in North) you would have had a better view.

That is true but he didn't have to climb to do that. If he did then the blame would be squarely at his feet but being able to just flop and roll means you can't conclusively prove he was at fault which leaves the club open to a claim if legal proceedings were brought against them. It's just the world we live in now.

The view in certain rows of The West stand upper have had the safety rail right in line for 40 + years. Clearly visible in some camera angles too. 10 minutes into the Liverpool game no one will notice the new glass screen!

It is H&S gone bonkers. It’s a shame that this is the response if the sample size is 1. I would be annoyed if they had to do the same on any other stand, appreciate the builds are different before anyone points that out!

It would be interesting to know whether the Safety Advisory Group insisting that measures be put in place were a result of the Maidstone fan or the people using the box roof to get down to the pitch on the last day of the season (or both).

I’m glad you went there because I did seem to remember that happened but couldn’t be sure. Inadvertently fans shooting themselves in the foot if the sample size is higher than 1.

I know legally the obligation is presumably on the club taking reasonable measures to manage safety but surely a public notice is deemed enough otherwise when do people that choose to do stupid things get to take accountability for their own actions?

Seems an overreaction either way.

I do find it mad that people are upset that people are upset about this. Clearly it changes the dynamic of where you sit, is liable to have rainwater, grime etc and also changes the perspective. I would be bothered by it too. OP is fair in my opinion.

This isn't about the Maidstone fan though. It is because of the several Town fans who went over the top after the last game, one luckily avoided landing on someone in the lower tier. There have been screens in front of the regular away end for a while.

FWIW, I have a perspex screen for about a third of my pitch view in SARU, and it really isn't a problem at all.

Just wondering as a season ticket holder and have been for 30 + years how many fatalities have there been from rolling across executive boxes and free falling 8 ft onto unaware fans below or concrete?

Or was it the insurance claim from the spectator which has brought health and safety up to speed!

Will these glasses be put into the other stands?

"there has never been any problem, except for when idiots behave idiotically"

The vast majority of safety / safeguarding measures in place at football stadiums are exactly there in case idiots behave idiotically.

And there will always be idiots at football matches.

Perhaps like an aircraft we should make everyone wear seat belts. On a serious note though, if Health and safety was paramount, then why do we still allow people standing in the SBR lower?

The screens are apparently installed as a result of an idiotic Maidstone fan. But they were already at the away end and when dirty Leeds scored last season, and at least two were up and over onto the roof. It doesn't stop idiotic mindless yobs from getting onto the roof of the boxes, so why are our own fans being treated this way?
I wouldn't be happy if this was in front of my season ticket seat.

I guess Town have taken advice & possible their insurers have said they won't cover them or pay out if they don't do something to deter other idiots.
I was on my local Parish Council & our Health & Safety adviser suggested we put a 10 foot fence all around a large dell on Council property & then our insurer said they wouldn't cover us for any liability if someone fell into the dell, although you would have to be an absolute idiot to fall into it. Compensation culture sometimes forces people into irrational actions.

It's not ideal really. But the current attitude of the powers that be in the club are that you are going to have to deal with it.

It's a shame that the communication regarding the various seat changes hasn't been handled well at all.
