We’re a group of 7 friends who are season ticket holders and sit together in Row A & B, Block B, Upper Cobbold and have done so for over 20 years. We will be very much affected by the placing of a glass safety panel. We feel that this panel will obstruct our sight lines of the game greatly. We would be interested to know if other supporters are equally concerned about this unsightly, unwelcome and unwarranted step by the club…. we understand it’s to deter another ‘Maidstone type jumper’.
We are currently in dialogue with the club, both verbally but mainly via email. We would urge and encourage any supporters who have similar concerns and objections to this safety panel to express their thoughts and questions to the club, if they haven’t already done so of course.

Well aware Its not my place of all people to say anything. But I do like to share my thoughts.
So. Personally. Anyone with an issue about safety measures being put in place should really grow up a tad.
You'll still see the game. It's no way similar to sitting behind a roof pillar it's safety glass ffs.
If it saves a life then brilliant. If it saves an injury great. It's a piece of see through material to enhance safety whilst insuring you continue to enjoy the game you love. |  |

Yes, you can see through glass. But reflections, dirt and rainwater will mean the threshold will always be very visible and presumably I'd find that bloody annoying. |  | | |

On a serious note, I have been to minor league ice hockey in America where there are of course Perspex screens like that. It’s surprising how quickly you get used to it tbh. You just don’t notice it. I think and of hope it’ll be fine for you.
Not ideal, but in the circumstances I can understand why it’s had to be done. Hopefully, they’ll either put in place plans to replace that old stand or at the very least renovate it properly. [Post edited 25 Jun 2024 17:16]

I think the difference is with hockey, every fan knows and expects they’ll be viewing behind a plastic screen. Just seems wrong and unnecessary for footy. |  |

It's not really unnecessary though. It's clearly unsafe to be able go from top tier to lower tier by accident or on purpose and land on those below. It's surprising its never been sorted before. The option they've chosen enables the viewer to still get a good view of the game. The alternative being a safety bar etc would be much more restrictive. | |

LOL, I am sure it will be fine if they put coated glass in slightly angle it back so it doesn't cause glare. Hopefully all this upheaval will only be for a season and they will start work on a new stand next summer. | | | |

I’ll be honest and say I’m amazed there’s not been a safety installation put in, in the Cobbold stand years ago. There’s always been fans ( at some point) getting onto the corporate boxes roof. QPR fans got onto the pitch years ago and ran at Town fans on the other side of the pitch. The Maidstone incident has been something waiting to happen for years. |  |

Agree with that. The problem I suppose is that when the stand was built, it was with standing in the lower tier and no Executive Boxes. Falling or sliding from the upper level wasn’t on in those days. Too much of a drop.

You jest, but actually you can get these really cool vinyl applications for glass that are seemingly solid adverts or logos on one side, normally the outside of bars and things, but inside they're see through and still look like its completely clear glass, slightly filtered light but it's absolutely doable. | | | |

Yes, you make a good point there. The Cobbold is the oldest stand now isn’t it. I wonder when the club / IBC are likely to go ahead with its redevelopment as the whole area behind the stand will be under massive development for a while I’d have thought. Too much to get done in a summer break? | |

We have seen many incidents over the years because of the poor configuration. I am shocked it has taken this long to do anything. I can remember fans from; Millwall, Leicester, Arsenal, Portsmouth, Norwich, West Ham and Spurs. All running on the roof of the boxes and jumping down to the lower tier.
