One for the libtards 11:01 - Jul 6 with 2242 views | bluelagos | Starmer has just appointed this bloke as his minister responsible for prisons. He clearly goes against the "lock em up for longer" view of most of society. We will see if he can actually make a change, and then whether those changes are positive for those in prison and by extension for wider society. Timpson is unelected, untested in politics but clearly knows a thing or two about rehabilitating offenders.

I thought Cameron abolished IPP sentances?

One for the libtards on 11:33 - Jul 6 with 2004 views | DJR | As the prisons are full, something needs to be done, but I rather fear it will take a lot of money (that isn't there) to put in place the necessary measures to ensure proper rehabilitation (and supervision), and the Government will be up against competing demands from the public and media to lock 'em up. But a very good idea in principle. [Post edited 6 Jul 2024 11:36]

He’s not in charge of sentencing. Sadly, going by that interview.

He may well suffer the same fate as Rory Stewart, who had honorable intentions when Prisons minister but didn't achieve his objectives. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Let's hope the prison officers don't let the keys to the prisoner cells out of their sight.

My exact thoughts. Same with appointing a Minister for Science who is an actual Scientist. Appreciate appointing people on their merits is somewhat novel but fingers crossed those two appointments go well.

There is still a sizable cohort who are still under IPP.... a group with significant mental health issues and high suicide rate due to the unbearable pressure of their continuing sentence. They need to have their suituation reviewed as a matter of considerable urgency The Guardian have recently done a series of articles about this https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/series/the-ipp-scandal

Brilliant isn't it - to think we've arrived at a point where I'm almost crying with relief at people being appointed because they actually have knowledge & experience in their field, know what they're talking about, & might actually apply that for the best interests of other people - rather than mates being gifted in "you scratch my back" deals to increase their own wealth and power. Should never have had to put up with 14 years of that, but it makes the contrast (so far) all the starker & the relief all the greater. Phew! The UK already feels a better place this morning.

It does, but Starmer has got to deliver. The rise of Reform and the prospect of a Reform/Tory alliance (in whatever form) does mean that the cost of failure could be very high. Stakes have got a lot higher. IF (and it's a big IF) they could get a returns agreement with France for those arriving on boats - even if done with an acceptance of taking a number of refugees - that would be a huge achievement. Lets hope they make progress on that as it would be a massive statement of what can be achieved with adults in charge.

Here's hoping for more intelligent appointments such as these. Another potential upside is that they won't have to juggle constituency work with their ministerial briefs and, similarly, two MPs won't have to risk poor representation of their constituents by prioritising Government work. My only slight misgiving is that, one assumes, they'll need to be given life peerages in order to take up their ministerial roles? Needs must, but (barring complete reform of the upper chamber) I'd much rather see a specific type of peerage which is valid only for the time in post or suchlike. Hopefully JT will end up as Lord Timpson of Bootle/Shoeburyness/Sole Bay or suchlike, just to show that the Government also has a sense of humour.

But it was worse than that - you missed the word "talentless" People like Grayling, Williamson, Raab, Phelp, Dorries. And breathe. We are shot of these tossers for a good few years, fingers crossed. Good riddance to every last one of them.

I’ve heard a lot about a Tory/Reform alliance and that the conservatives will have to try and woo back Reform voters. But surly there must be a lot of Tory voters who don’t want anything to do with Farage or go any further to the right?

The Reform/Tory/Populist threat really can't be overstated. It feels as if Starmer has, essentially, been given five years' notice that he's going to have to have produced some solid results by 2029.

If we want a clear note of difference between the parties (for those who like to pretend that they are basically all the same)... Ask yourself whether Starmer would ever have given someone like Dorries a job...
