As Rio has just said- played with a low block. Never threatened until behind.

We didn’t even press Spain when they were in possession, we just dropped back behind the ball. Just negative out of date tactics.

That’s true, but could we really go toe to toe with them and come out on top? I’d doubt it. But would love another manager to come in and give it a go!

It’s weird how he doesn’t trust his squad, won’t mix anything up until it’s too late and beyond obvious. I’m glad he’s not our manager! He’s the anti-McKenna. Still, that was a much better second half. First half was crap but the second was more worthy of a final.

And reverted, I think, to the 4 at the back and unbalanced 10s despite having been better in previous games with the 3. Bellingham is not a left winger....

It worked for us this season, but you need a system and to trust your players.

Thanks Gareth - we've got to two finals, but I think I'd rather go out early through taking more risks and playing to our strengths. We were miserable pretty much all through the tournament but some individual quality got us through. Can't knock the resilience, but we could do better and impose ourselves more. Best team won the tournament by a mile.

Agree with this. Gareth is a defensive minded coach. It’s nearly brought success, but now, with the players England have, let’s get an attack minded coach and make a real challenge for the next World Cup. With our players we should be playing like Spain.

In the end, same old story on 09:41 - Jul 15 with 1563 views | OldFart71 | Did I enjoy the Euro's ? Frankly NO. Not just because England managed to lose yet again. Was Southgate to blame ? Partly, but then were we the best team at the Euro's, again NO. Were we second best. The outcome showed we were, but then many said we were lucky with the way the side of the draw we were and also but for an excellent goal we wouldn't have got any further than the league stages. Why do I say Southgate was partly to blame ? well it was obvious from a fairly early stage that Kane wasn't mobile enough up front. We rave about the Premier League being the best in the World, but always fail in major competitions. Probably because not many teams rely on English players. They have a few who complement foreign players. England unlike Town for instance don't and can't cover all positions, it showed because when Shaw wasn't available we didn't have anyone to put in his place and Spain's goals came from the other side. It does make you wonder whether we will ever win a major competition again because every "Golden" generation fails because by the time the World Cup comes around one of the other major forces in football will have sorted out their problems and gone past England.
In the end, same old story on 09:50 - Jul 15 with 1536 views | oldbeardy | Agree that Southgate takes some of the blame for negative tactics and being overly loyal to certain players but equally our players just aren't as good as they are cracked up to be - perhaps it's tactics/set up and not the individuals, I don't know, but our complete inability to keep possession or to play out was really stark

I think we were cautious and it did work for 45 minutes in fairness, it cancelled Spain out What was disappointing from our point of view was we knew they would press hard, nothing should have been a surprise there but we didn't have to he bravery to play forward when we recovered the ball It was often Rice who got free only to waste the momentum with a poor pass, rather than the positive one to break the lines The balance of the side hasn't been right all tournament though, we haven't offered enough down the left and we have lacked someone with some genuine pace on the break [Post edited 15 Jul 2024 15:17]

The bench had left side attack and pace. The bench had the skill to unlock that midfield and defence. Unfortunately, Southgate tends to leave the bench on the bench until to late. Palmer proved we have the quality and Gordon would have provided genuine left side pace and skill. Why Gordon was barely used is beyond me. If you don't trust or want to play them, don't take them.

In the end, same old story on 20:24 - Jul 15 with 1241 views | Poultman | Problem the way I see it is, we do not play with an identity, we do with McKenna. We just pick the best players probably due to pressure and shoe horn them into a system and hope that pure individual brilliance will win the day, as against picking for the system that’s been identified by the manager. The representation of Real Sociedad players in the team says it all. Finished about 7th in the league but they fit the profile and the system. Times move, we now unlike before have some of the best players in the world but a team with an identity we do not have

We (probably) have the best league in the world because we have the most money to attract the best coaches in the world. Until we have a world class national coach, we'll have to hope to have enough top players in each position in order to have the flexibility to match other sides with more savvy coaches than us. As good as they are, if we continue to have a fixed starting 11 which we don't change until after 75 minutes we will remain predictable and unlikely to win anything. This video linked by Hugoagogo makes sense of it all:
