Hi all,
Would you complete our 90 second survey? The aim is to find out where supporters of your club live. When we get some responses, I will publish the stats here - it will show the towns/cities and countries where people live.

It's about putting your club on the map, showing its support around the country and beyond. I'm an exile so I've got a personal interest in this.

Might be more interesting to do a survey of where clubs live now. Ipswich used to be based in Bermuda or the Caymans, nobody seemed overly sure, now it’s run out of Cleveland, Ohio though again I doubt anyone knows where a once Suffolk football club is now based. | |

Good that Gav has checked you out but surprised that it wasn't pointed out to you that the annual TWTD questionnaire already has a question on the subject of your survey (you could even go back through the results year by year to create graphs and diagrams to show how the demographics have moved over the last decade or so, unless Cotty has already done that...) |  |

Ahh, those halcyon days when the club was owned by distinguished, very nice, very rich people (related to the Duke of Devonshire) who owned more land than Bermuda and people like you could tug a forelock and say ‘thank ee sur’ for your annual crumbs from master’s table.

Hi thanks for the question.
I have an Italian friend whose second team is Hibernian, a relation in Cayman that supports Crewe, I know two Romanians who support Bristol City at their first club! I am also an exile (I lived for years in Italy and before that lived and worked in Romania but am back in England). I thought I would find out more about the topic of Exiles. There are UK born people that have moved abroad who still support their club, relatives of the same, foreign nationals who support a UK club. Eventually I'm going to widen the investigation further than the supporters stats. But for now, I'm doing the initial collection of stats. I will publish your stats in this thread when enough responses have been collected. Feel free to follow this up with any other questions you have. Thanks, Tony | | | |

Thanks for referencing that post and the other posts that mention the survey. I've seen that data - @GavTWTD told me about it. It's a very impressive data set. However, I'd prefer to collect my own data for a couple of reasons. One is that I don't have permission from the respondents to use their data. Secondly, as I wrote elsewhere, mine relates to a wider project about Exiles. Thirdly I'd like to collect my own data. Fourth, people can opt-in to receive an update on the data when it is published. | | | |

I suppose it could be current or one-time proximity to a club's location or family connection (or both). Or it could be neither of those, especially with the growth of Sky Sports.
I imagine Ipswich will have not many of the latter, but clubs like Man U will have millions.

I started supporting Ipswich as my grandparents lived in Suffolk and I visited Ipswich shortly before the 78 cup final. As a result the 78 cup final was the first I ever watched (on TV) and have supported Town ever since. |  | | |

Anecdotally, I know that Ipswich does have quite a number of fans with no birth, residence or family connection with town or region. Not through Sky Sports, but going back much further, to the era when we were often around the top end of the old First Division, challenging for and winning trophies. People who took an interest then - as simply a top team playing well - have often retained that support, or at least a fondness, for the club. |  |
