So they jail five environment protestors for 4 and 5 years for a protest that disrupted motorway traffic. Rapists, violent muggers and those who commit GBH with intent get shorter sentences. Way to go.

They have been prosecuted and sentenced under recent Tory legislation but don't expect any difference with Labour now in power given the armed forces minister, Luke Pollard, has said the sentences were appropriate because they will act as a deterrent.

Some do, obviously, and many do something about it. Quite a lot moan about the inconvenience of protest and do nothing, even if they have children. I stand by my comment.
Missing a cancer appointment, an operation or dying in an ambulance is not an inconvenience.
I haven't seen one person object in this thread to the need to address the climate catastrophe we are facing as a species. It is the counter productive measures that some of these protesters have been using which have been the subject of debate.

What is it about actually engaging with people and governments with the aim of averting the climate catastrophe, rather than alienating the people we need on side to do this and achieving fcuk all do you object to Clapham and Big Al?
You didn't say that though. You said "Protest over progress it is then." It was a nice bit of meaningless alliteration. Nobody wants protest over progress.

How many people have actually died in an ambulance because of climate protestors? You people moaning about protests always go to the extreme possibilities, but the truth is it's mostly people being a bit late for work.
No, no-one's objecting to the need to address the climate catastrophe, but equally most of those complaining about protestors are doing nothing themselves. Regardless of if you agree with their methods or not, at least they're trying something (within their limited abilities).
What are you doing other than protesting about the protestors? You have several children, a business or two, take holidays abroad... I wonder if you're doing anything to offset any of that? Genuine question.

How do they "send the cause backwards"?
Because the vast majority of the population, the very people you need to get on Board who are more concerned with feeding their families, paying their mortgage and getting to work are completely and utterly switched off by the extreme actions of a few and therefore makes it so much harder to educate and get them to change their views and behaviours. Ultimately we all want the same outcome which is a brighter future for our children and grandchildren and generations to come. We just disagree on best way to achieve this. Extremism in any form doesn’t work.

Here's a link to his comments which indicates precious little difference between Labour and the Tories when it comes to law and order, and brings to mind the following song.

Most people know what's bad for the environment (in terms of what they can do personally) and are either already doing it or aren't. What evidence do you have that these protests are making things worse? No-one's deliberately damaging the environment because they're so angry at protestors!
Also, "Extremism in any form doesn’t work" is absolute nonsense. There are LOADS of instances throughout history where extremism has forced change. You're full of Daily Mail headlines and soundbites, but where's the substance?

As usual, you run away because you have no answer (or rather the answer is "close to nothing").
Like when you accused me of sexism and all you could provide was one word from 5 years ago. When I showed the thread you linked revealed no sexism by me you weren't seen again.
You're right, no point replying, no point debating with you. When the questions get uncomfortable you just run away or swerve them.

Right I'm putting you on ignore for a while dollers.
I'm not running away. I'm refusing to engage with a needy middle aged man who has the emotional intelligence of a prepubescent schoolboy. How dare you challenge me with regards to my lifestyle choices in having children.

Except he wasn’t attacking you. If you accept that we are living in a climate crisis then people need to reign in their lifestyle choices such as going abroad a few times a year - especially if they want the younger generation not to bear the costs of their lifestyle choices.
I have children and I am worried for their future in terms of the environment. We do try to do our bit and that probably isn’t enough.
Like it or not, those protestors will be on the right side of history.

LOL, the irony of saying I have the emotional intelligence of a prepubescent schoolboy after accusing me of sexism the other week... with your proof being one word you saved in your locker from 5 years ago. Have a look at yourself.
And for clarity, I didn't challenge your lifestyle choice in having children, I asked what you're doing to offset your lifestyle choices. It's very possible to make certain lifestyle choices and offset them in other ways.
The fact that your answer to a debate is effectively to put your fingers in your ears shows it's you who lacks emotional intelligence.

It does seem to me that there is a distinction to be drawn between the effectiveness of the protests from a PR point on view and the actual sentences themselves.
As it is, Amnesty International sums thing up well for me.
“These lengthy jail sentences for people seeking climate justice should increase the alarm over the ongoing crackdown against peaceful protest in this country, which violates all our human rights.
“With our overcrowded prison system already described as a ‘ticking time bomb’ by the new Lord Chancellor, these jail terms are all the more indefensible.
“Today's draconian sentences and the manner in which the trial was conducted show that the hardline anti-protest approach adopted by the previous Government is being emulated by the courts.
“People should never be punished more harshly for engaging in protest than they would for an equivalent non-protest offence.
“We vehemently opposed the sections of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act that were used in this case, and we repeat our calls on the new Government to repeal them.
“The Government must protect all of our rights to protest, which are fundamental to a democratic society.”

I should have been clearer. I assume that the judge in this case is sympathetic towards The Conservative Party and unhappy that Labour want to reduce the length of sentences and is being reactionary giving a middle finger to Starmer. I do not think this will be the last example either.

My first reaction, after wasting my time reading it all, was to wonder why people like to snipe each other for the shear fun of it.
Turning to the original post a custodial sentence is justified, the defendants have made it clear that they will be doing the same thing at the earliest opportunity. 4-5 years is however too harsh a sentence.
