The government want to stop prison overcrowding. 17:46 - Jul 18 with 14901 views | Mercian | So they jail five environment protestors for 4 and 5 years for a protest that disrupted motorway traffic. Rapists, violent muggers and those who commit GBH with intent get shorter sentences. Way to go. [Post edited 18 Jul 2024 17:56]

Why do posters put other posters on ignore ? It is easily the most useless function of this or any other forum ( I am guessing that Phil and Gav are not keen on it either but cannot remove it without the rest of the software falling apart. And I suppose that would be putting ignore on ignore and I don't want that to happen.)

The government want to stop prison overcrowding. on 10:50 - Jul 19 by MattinLondon | Except he wasn’t attacking you. If you accept that we are living in a climate crisis then people need to reign in their lifestyle choices such as going abroad a few times a year - especially if they want the younger generation not to bear the costs of their lifestyle choices. I have children and I am worried for their future in terms of the environment. We do try to do our bit and that probably isn’t enough. Like it or not, those protestors will be on the right side of history. |
JSO dont go about it the right way though. Blocking the M25 caused major disruption and was life threatening. I think as a direct result of their actions, there was a lorry collision and a police motorcyclist was injured trying to slow down traffic. Had there been fatalities linked to the protests, they'd be looking at much more severe sentences.

Didn't a young mum die waiting for an ambulance after a RTA when a similar protest took place at the Dartford Crossing? Still, just an "inconvenience" as somebody posted earlier.

Doesn't the perspective matter. For that family, the greatest personal tragedy, but for the human race it just doesn't register as significant. Global climate change of the type now being predicted is going to bring personal tragedies to the entire human race. Daily and for a thousand years. An inconvenient truth.

I agree with their aims. I disagree with their methods which are counterproductive and do not bring in board the people we need to.

Many more people would have died that day on the road because under funded police are unable to put out speeding patrols. Should police go to jail? Many more people would have died in hospital because The NHS are vastly underfunded. Should doctors and nurses go to jail? Off course not. Many hundreds of people would have died to due climate change. Should climate protestors spend half a decade in jail. According to many people posting here the answer is yes.

All right. Lets lock them up and throw away the key. Tomorrow we will jail someone for 5 years for sticking labels saying "Stop the Oil" on windows. Next week will will jail a foreign journalist for reporting on the labels on windows story. Then in 5 years time we are a proverbial Russia. How's that for an analogy?

The government want to stop prison overcrowding. on 19:50 - Jul 19 by Mercian | This thread has people who support jailing people for 5 years for peaceful protests. Protests which I concur were illegal and dangerous and deserved legal sanctions. Have you actually read all the posts? Are you also trying to make me bite? In that case you have succeeded which is quite a feat as I am usually sober with my posts. Well done to you. [Post edited 19 Jul 2024 19:51]

It's not an argument. It's a truth. Perspective matters when mitigating actions such as those prosecuted. Does anyone on this thread dispute the science? But the judge directed no reasonable excuse. [Post edited 19 Jul 2024 21:00]

I don't deny it's the truth. Hypothetically, would the same apply if they started targeting the lives of the ultra wealthy with their private jets and wealth which could be used for green investment? Where's the line? A few lives for the future of the world. In this day and age I should make it clear I am not in any way suggesting this. Purely making a point.

Yeah I'd like to hear these options, too. How does JSO / other climate campaigners get the attention of the press and the public? Hint: previous governments have done the square root of FA. At least these Draconian sentences are putting climate change in the news, I guess

Do you think this type of direct action, that targets the general public and not the big companies or government, is having a positive impact on climate change awareness? All I see is the general public getting pissed off. Has one climate change denier or government minister looked at people holding up traffic and reading about missed hospital appointments, funerals and operations suddenly had a damascus-like conversion? Why don't they put their efforts into liaising with local authorities and get into schools and business forums at a local level and start educating people about climate change? because that would have a far greater impact than laying in a road and pissing off taxi drivers and commuters who are trying to earn a living in already difficult times.

Actually, I do think it has had a positive impact on climate change awareness. It's in the news. We are aware. Sad that it comes to it, but there it is. You think climate change activists don't do those things you suggest? Spoiler: they do (including JSO). Why do you think you've not heard of them doing that?

I would suggest that the people who post on this forum are quite a good example of the general public. From what I have read on this thread most people think the sentences handed down for peaceful protest are very excessive. If we are a good example of the general public then most of the public are more pissed off with the draconian position of the courts and the previous government. They are pissed off with the chipping away of our rights to protest. Something that many of our fathers/grandfathers/ great grandfathers fought the most bloody and just war in human history to protect only to be eroded by people in power who do like people protesting against their views and policies. Fundamentally this whole issue is not about global warming, disruption or prison sentences it is about our right to free speech and protest. Under the previous government The UK devolved to what is almost a flawed democracy and it is still devolving. Would you prefer to live in a democratic country where the trains are not always on time or a dictatorship where they always arrive as scheduled? [Post edited 19 Jul 2024 23:51]
