Has anyone ever done that before? Promoted from second tier and win top flight at first attempt?

RIP Sir Bobby

No, Leicester had been there a couple of years when they won it. Didn't stop the press calling it football's greatest ever story, ignoring the likes of Town and Forest.

I think they won the old Div 2 and the following season finished runners-up in Div 1? I could be wrong.

Pretty sure some Red Bull Leeds fans have earmarked winning the championship this season and then winning the PL the following season.

I would be pretty sure that whoever won the very first top flight also did it at their first attempt as well. Preston, Burnley or someone like that I reckon.

Although the first Football League winners would not have been promoted the previous season, they would have become members of the initial League by an arrangement.

'The first meeting was held at Anderton's Hotel in London on 23 March 1888 on the eve of the FA Cup Final. The Football League was formally created and named in Manchester at a further meeting on 17 April at the Royal Hotel... "The Football League" was proposed by Major William Sudell, representing Preston, and quickly agreed upon...The first season of the Football League began a few months later on 8 September with twelve member clubs from the Midlands and north of England: Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers...Preston won the first league title without losing a game and completed the first league–cup double by also taking the FA Cup. ..A new Second Division was formed in 1892 with the absorption of the rival 12-club Football Alliance. Alliance clubs Nottingham Forest, The Wednesday (later renamed Sheffield Wednesday) and Newton Heath (later renamed Manchester United) joined thirteen League clubs in the new First Division, giving it sixteen members.'

If we do and outside bets like Coventry, Lincoln and Chesterfield all win their divisions, my 18p bet yields £500k. As you can’t buy anything for 18p. I considered it worth a small change shot.

So Preston were the first team to win it at the first attempt and we are the only other team to have done so. An impressive feat that is highly unlikely to ever be repeated.

Yes, there has to be a first winner when the league was created. Looks like Preston in 1889. 12 teams, 22 games. But that’s not quite the same thing in my view. The leagues were yet to be formed as we know them. I can find no team from when a second division was formed in 1892.

In terms of ITFCs achievement, I stand by what I said in the previous post - more than happy to be corrected, of course.

Edit: Apols and ignore - failed to spot WeWereZombies post which explains it far better than me.
