Sure, Sunderland won't want to make a loss. But there is zero evidence that they paid £10m for him plus a 40% sell-on fee. It really does appear that you've just made that up.

Yes, FLW are saying 40% sell on fee (first URL below), but then a Sunderland linked news website (second URL below) is saying 25%. That website is written by Sunderland fans who are journalists. Doesn't mean they have any inside track, but if there were credible rumours that Sunderland paid £10m, surely they would be likely to know about that.

As indicated by others, there is ordinarily a significant difference between a sell-on percentage of a total fee and a sell-on percentage of profit. But in this case, the two could be extremely similar numbers, because the fee paid by Sunderland may well have been very small. Clarke was running down his contract, and it may well be that Spurs took a hefty sell on clause as second prize when it became clear nobody would pay a big old fee like they did. Spurs paid £10m. The second URL below says that Sunderland only paid £750,000 for him.

Frankly, the 40% may be speculation, the 25% may be speculation, and the £750,000 may be speculation. But we don't have anything better, as far as I can see.

Where did you get the idea that Sunderland paid £10m? I have seen no such figure anywhere. onefootball says 5.2m euros, which could be made up, or it could be assigning a book value to the sell-on fee. transfermarkt have a question mark, but they have his market value as having declined over that period. One opinion, sure, but I don't see any evidence that anyone is saying that Sunderland paid as much as Spurs paid.

I think he'd be a great signing to be honest. There's bound to be competition for him, and he's bound to command a fairly hefty fee, but not one that's governed by Sunderland's need to recoup more than £10m having factored in a 40% sell on fee.

I clearly said I read it. It was within the tweet replies to the clarke story tweet If it's wrongs it's wrong it's no drama but thought I'd covered that by saying I had read it.

I hope it is wrong as then there's a good chance this could he something of interest to us as he'd be a fairly solid signing.

Can't see it

40% sell on fee. Sunderland aren't gonna sell for a loss.

They paid £10, mill for him.

( what I've read)

Got to be honest, never been that impressed with him and has really struggled when playing against Premier League opposition in the past. Would prefer Sarimento or Smodzic, especially if we are looking at £18 million.

He’s 23 and racked up 15 goals + 4 assists last season in a struggling Sunderland side.

Just going by the story and some of the replies to it. Someone's mentioned adds total it upto £10 mill. ( which explains where I'd seen the 10 mill bit, Which have to be paid alongside the sell on fee.
No idea if you would have to cover the add ons.. would you?

25 million is ridiculous considering Tottenham brought him for 10 and he has only done fairly well in the Championship. There is no way he is more valuable than everyone we have signed so far.

I read exactly the same as HighgateBlue as a very quick google search.

Curious to know where you read your £10m figure from?

Hoping it is the £750k which means Sunderland should be more flexible.

Edit - Ignore that. Just been told we in fact are after him.

We did enquire earlier in the summer but have asked again. Not confident it’ll definitely be happen but 18m is the figure mentioned. They have a 25% sell on fee which is something that makes them want more dosh than ideal (unsurprisingly).

I'd heard the sell-on is 25 per cent as well. Might well vary depending on the size of the fee. Also hearing something in the interest.

Dunno. Szmodics has actually been going on longer than Philogene did, though.

It’s going to be one of them where they drag it on I think knowing there’s other clubs interested

Ordinarily yes. However Sunderland are desperate for a striker or 2 and need serious cash to fund this.

It may happen.

Clarke is their best player for sure and would be a fantastic acquisition. Not sure where that leaves Broadhead. Possible part ex?

Clarke and Broadhead would be the two vying for the left-sided 10 role, surely? So long as he's not out for 4-5+ months, Broady will still have a role to play this season IMO.

Bit of a pattern here isn’t there? We seem to be fishing in the pool of players who’ve done reasonably well in the Championship, presumably hoping that KM and his team can turn them into PL players. But also paying quite a lot for Championship players (when was the last time someone offered £15-20M for one of our Championship players?).

A brave tactic? A sound one given KM’s ability to make the whole bigger than the sum of its parts? A naive one?

Must admit, I thought we’d look to bring in a bit more PL experience. Not that I’m questioning them - KM’s done more than enough to earn our trust. I’m just a little bit surprised (but probably shouldn’t be, as it’s the same model we used last year).

Edit - i’ve just seen Frimmers’ thread and this probably sits there. It looks like a few of us feel the same and we’re expecting a bit more PL experience.
Championship signings. by FrimleyBlue 23 Jul 2024 19:52
I'm really caught with how to feel about some of our business so far.

On the positive sides I get they meet the criteria set by KM so its got to be positive.

But there is that part of me that was expecting something more from a well backed ownership group than picking from the championship best stats table.

As long as it works of course it doesn't matter. But it's quite scary looking at how teams get torn apart in the prem that we re putting together a side that's either gonna shock a few. Or be primed for a championship title charge in 26 with probably the strongest championship team ever put together.

I dunno, I'm really on the fence with it I think.
I like the sound if clarke. But then I think of the fullbacks he'd be going against and think can he?

I dunno. My thoughts on it literally change every day depending if I'm defending our signings to other football fans or if I'm chatting to my son about what I always felt we would need once back in prem.

I honestly don't know

What are you thoughts?

Ok that’s interesting. It would certainly mean Harness and AAH going out I’d say
8 forward players for 4 positions. McKenna likes to change it up at 60/65mins.. imagine picking 4 from these and having 4 to bring on.

Hirst/Delap/Szmodics
Clarke/Broadhead
Burns/Hutchinson/Chaplin

We are spending some crazy amounts if that’s true, I must admit to feeling a little nervy.

We still needs a few more as well, striker and midfielders x 2 as a minimum. We still have a couple of loans to fill, and at least there will be potential resale value.

We have 5x loans that could be utilised. 2x Domestic and 3x overseas in matchday squad.

That's before you consider any free transfers we might pick up between now and August.

Don't fret about the money.

If we spend £100-£110m, we're getting circa £135-£140m in broadcast money. Then probably £40m+ in other revenue. So long as our wage bill isn't £80m per annum, how do we make a loss, let alone breach PSR?
