ITFC to offer 18m for Jack Clarke on 19:18 - Jul 23 by portmanking | If it's as low as 25%, that means Sunderland would get £15m to work with if we got Clarke for circa £20m. That'll get their sporting director's juices flowing for some South American hidden gems that'll never adapt to Sunderland or the Championship. |
20 million seems steep to me for Clarke. Think he’s decent but 15/16 million seems about right to me.

100% agree with this. No Prem experience so are going to take a very expensive gamble on this? Szmodics is a good risk, this isn't, particularly with the messy sell on clause.

This feels a bit like the Philogene one. One of the standout players in the Championship, but it's not immediately apparent how he would fit into the team or if he would suit our style, the price sounds high, and the situation just sounds very complicated. I'm more interested in Szmodics, just like I was more keen on Greaves than Philogene.

ITFC to offer 18m for Jack Clarke on 22:51 - Jul 23 by ipswichtillidie | Ok that’s interesting. It would certainly mean Harness and AAH going out I’d say 8 forward players for 4 positions. McKenna likes to change it up at 60/65mins.. imagine picking 4 from these and having 4 to bring on. Hirst/Delap/Szmodics Clarke/Broadhead Burns/Hutchinson/Chaplin |
Two for each position is a good rule of thumb for the rest of the team, I would say, but for the front four who mostly get changed every match, you probably need an extra two on top for injuries. So ideally I think we need three number 9s and seven support strikers. There's more interchangeability between the support strikers, so seven is OK. I'd keep AAH here as I think he's the type and at the stage of his development to benefit more from our quality coaching than game time. I'd also keep Harness for his energy and robustness as a more defensive option for certain games, and also a decent bit of flexibility in is game.

Looking at our front 4, Ladapo likely to move on this window, and AAH linked with going out on loan (makes sense considering he made a big step up last season, and recovering from an injury - unless the club want to carefully manage that in-house), and I think it'll be down to Harness whether he's happy with his role in the squad, or wants to move on for more gametime - I'd be more than happy if he stays. We've got scope to bring in extra attacking players, as Hutchinson and Delap are still young enough to not count towards the 25-man squad limit: RW: Burns, Delap** 10: Chaplin, Hutchinson** LW: Broadhead, Harness CF: Hirst Even with just 2 players for each position that's just 5 players (including Harness) who would count towards squad numbers - think we'll definitely sign another CF and LW even if we sign Szmodics

Sounds good to me and would probably be the end of our attacking signings? Hirst/Szmodics Clarke/B'head Chappers/Hutch Burns/Delap Happy with that.

I’m feeling exactly the same. I’m starting to feel that we’re getting into gambling territory now. If we sign Clarke and Smodix for the fees being mentioned we surely can’t have much left for additions to the midfield. I really think we ought to strengthen there, but assume this will be via loans now. Edit - think I replied to the wrong post! [Post edited 24 Jul 2024 8:48]

Szmodics is £8m, not £20m.

Sure, but still surprised our signings (and linked players) are so heavily attacking, given that our defence was probably our weakest point last season. Greaves and Johnson look like excellent signings (really like the look of Greaves btw) but would find it hard to believe that we’ll go in to the leagues season with no defensive midfield strengthening.

Scoring goals in the PL will be a lot harder to come by. The sides that go down are the ones that don't score goals.

Philogene I had no problem with the fee, think he has a high ceiling. Clarke, I don’t think he’s at Philogene’s level but is a good player. He will improve the squad so that would be a positive but just not sure he transfers his performances to the premier league.

That's the key, seen loads of discussion about players, who people like, who they don't etc, at the end of the day Ashton and McKenna have transformed this club so best we trust their judgement on players. To be honest, McKenna could get a tune out of Basil Brush, so I wouldn't worry about the calibre of player, what experience they have or don't have, how much it costs. Just enjoy the ride.

ITFC to offer 18m for Jack Clarke on 10:36 - Jul 24 with 1341 views | SuperKieranMcKenna | A player with a very high ceiling- he’s done really well in terms of goals in a mediocre team with a poor coach (Beale). 4 assists in a season however is a poor return for a player of his talent and position- I reckon KM could coach this into him though and potentially would be a real threat for us.

ITFC to offer 18m for Jack Clarke on 23:01 - Jul 23 by portmanking | We have 5x loans that could be utilised. 2x Domestic and 3x overseas in matchday squad. That's before you consider any free transfers we might pick up between now and August. Don't fret about the money. If we spend £100-£110m, we're getting circa £135-£140m in broadcast money. Then probably £40m+ in other revenue. So long as our wage bill isn't £80m per annum, how do we make a loss, let alone breach PSR? |
If we "spend" £120 million in fees, and each player is signed to a 5 year contract, then our accounts will show the £120 million spread over the next 5 financial years, so £24 million per year. We don't have cashflow issues, due to the substantial sums invested during the last 6 months and the TV money due this coming season. So, crazy though it sounds, as long as the contracts the players sign have appropriate reductions in the case of relegation, then £120 million, or even more, to sign mainly young players, on long-term contracts, can be sustainable. If one of these players becomes a big hit in the Premier then their value will double or more by the season's end.

The lack of assists was partly down to them not really having a good striker I think.

When he played at PR, I thought he played well and was clearly their biggest threat, scoring a really nice goal. He was also a lot bigger than I had expected, which seems to be an encouraging theme in our recruitment. Agree with the point about them not having a striker. Bellingham did his best (and again I thought had an impressive touch and work-rate), but he really was not the man for the job.

The key to us beating Sunderland that night was Harry Clarke getting to grips with Jack Clarke... He pushed him back and had to make him track back and stop his attacking threat... Jack Clarke would be a great signing, I have to say, would be really pleased with that
