Don't know why but ive got a horrible feeling about this. Hope I'm wrong obviously but wouldn't be surprised to see a serious incident and I don't mean that because of what has happened on the railways today.

The wife and I said exactly the same thing. Just feel it’s waaay too open to some kind of incident tonight. Hope I’m wrong, but there are plenty of rooftops to hide on.

People say this before every big event. There will always be a threat but I would imagine they have extremely tight security.

With their recent history the whole city will probably be swarming with police/military.

Truly impaired.

The Palestinians have already threatened an event. Can only imagine the level of security the Israeli team must have

It’ll be fine. They’ll be under the spotlight, not least through social media, but French are very good at organising stuff.

'the Palestinians'?

Are you referring to this as I can't see anything else suggesting that 'the Palestinians' are threatening the safety of Olympians.

I'd imagine they have more important things to worry about at the moment

Well the French police are blaming left wing extremists for the coordinated bonfires on the TGV system with arrests expected very soon.

Are any of the rabid Guardian readers on here currently on a train spotting holiday in France?

Quote:

"Officials have said more than 45,000 police officers are being deployed, while a 6km anti-terrorism barrier has been erected along the banks of the River Seine ahead of the opening ceremony

To keep participants safe, France will impose a no-fly zone of 150km during the ceremony, while snipers will be deployed on the top of buildings along the route."

Hope all goes well without incident.

The teams coming in on boats! Have we been, I’ve only just got in? I get they put us in a dingy…

I think that the biggest threat (if, indeed, any exists) will come from within rather than without.

France has been a socio-political tinderbox for years, and no doubt there will be plenty who will (perhaps rightly?) take a dim view of the billions being spent on Global Sports Day when there are, most likely, plenty of internal social issues that would desperately love even a fraction of the money.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Riots.

As most of the police and effort going into Paris a good opportunity to do bad deeds elsewhere in France as they will have taken their resources.

Guillotining the aristocracy.

Eating frogs and snails

Laughing at English attempts to speak their language, yet still insisting on speaking it.

Their politics are strange as well. Bit like the USA. They either want the far left or far right in power.

Oh and Versailles, though genuinely beautiful, is a nightmare to walk round. Like the Louvre.

At least they had the good sense not to put Israel and Iran in the same boat.

That’s exactly the issue. There’s even a huge amount of disgust about closing the Seine to commercial traffic for weeks before and during the harvest - just for last night’s soggy extravaganza. There’s trouble ahead of the Olympic village doesn’t get turned over to social housing asap

I’m glad somebody else thinks that about the Louvre and Versailles.

Oh, and the Mona Lisa. What a dingy little painting that is.

Overall, I like Paris. Very stylish, though their Metro system was a bit dingy and scary when I travelled on it.

Just watched the men's cycling time trial, which was a fairly close affair. Shame that the director seemed to think we wanted to see all the Paris landmarks on a regular basis and not the actual action on the road. Tarling unlucky, had a puncture which may have cost him a silver medal.
