How was it? on 19:04 - Jul 27 with 1190 views | bluelagos | So all the newbies showed a glimpse of what they offer. Keeper just oozed confidence - he's well tall and built like an outhouse. Looks very promising from what i saw. Full back - Johnson? - the one from West Ham - he looked good. Think on that performance he'll start ahead of Harry Clarke, especially if Clarke is not 1005 fit at the moment. Greaves looked class - think he could be a really top player from the bits I saw. Delap - probably the most disappointing of the four but early days. He looked happy to buy a free kick and when the ref ignored it, was ineffective. Not overly critical - he's young, he's learning but fair to say he's not the finished article atm. Of the others, Harkness probably the pick of the rest. He has real energy and pace - which was lacking from most the of players - as you'd expect with 3 weeks to go.

Typical early pre-season, very hard to get patterns of play with all of the changes. We are going to have some fun with Muric, think he's going to be quality and an entertaining watch.

I mentioned last week that delap reminded me of a mix of ex player characteristics. One is norwood. Seems to play wound up. Sometimes comes across as more interested in the fighting side of football over the playing aspect. I'm sure KM can get the best out of him as a footballer it's just he needs his head in the football itself imo.

Showed some good intelligent moves at times and had Jack Taylor scored when we were on top I think we'd have won BUT there was alot to learn from and not least about each other.... I think Taylor is going to be eased into the teaming his own right very soon.. agree that Barbrook looks a talent in his cameo!

“ Sometimes comes across as more interested in the fighting side of football over the playing aspect.” Where do you get this stuff from? Only booked 5 times last season, and only sent off once, in a PL2 match, for two yellows. There’s nothing to suggest he’s more interested in the dirty stuff.

How was it? on 18:58 - Jul 27 by itfcsuth | We showed our strengths and weaknesses in the game. Attacking wise, as you would expect we look dangerous, defensively, we looked vulnerable, both in transition, and during our press, at times Fortuna cut through the press very slickly. Have to be cautious of that in the PL, players are a lot better at being pressed and playing through it. Have to be cautious in transition as well, mistakes will be punished in the PL. Overall really enjoyable game though for a friendly, both sides had good moments. |
I think we really lacked balance down the left as Taylor never looked comfortable there.

Where do you get your stuff from? I've not said anything about him being sent off or getting cards. The poster to replied to spoke of him trying for freekicks etc that's I'm referring to. He seems very interested in the tugging, pulling aspects at times. Sorry again if my choice of wording doesn't suit you.

How was it? on 18:46 - Jul 27 by wrightsrightglove | I make Frimmers right. Our right backs are always going to be a target for criticism because of the way we play. They’re effectively fulfilling a right centre back role because leif is bombing forward meaning that they’re exposed to the oppositions overlap, particularly when we don’t have burns : Hutchinson tracking back at speed. Clarke was constantly being slated last season for being ‘out of position’ but they play exactly where McKenna wants them to and the way we play just means they’re exposed. It’s the negative side of the way that we play [Post edited 27 Jul 2024 18:48]

I think that's absolutely correct and I'm not debating the fact that the RB can become exposed at times. But it's about being competent on the ball and able to build down the right hand side. For me, he's not got that ability at the minute. If everyone is fit, Clarke should be nailed on to start based on what I've seen of all the options so far. I think he was very good in the games he did play last season. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

How was it? on 18:19 - Jul 27 by Churchman | This post is how I saw it. Goalie: he’s a definite upgrade, even if he does look like a stick of rock in that awful keeper kit. Johnson: he’ll be fine but looks exposed as everyone does on that side by the way we play Greaves: good player Delap: didn’t impress me. But then I’m the bloke who’d have returned Hutchinson to Chelsea few games in. Don’t know about Barbrook, but I thought he looked lively. Of the usuals, Harness did well. Morsy - service as normal. Hirst - willing runner. Taylor - worried about him. Overall, a pre-season friendly. Good quality opposition will do us no harm. We were disjointed but are work in progress so as far as I’m concerned, an interesting afternoon - all good. |
That's not far off how I saw it (on TownTV). Thought Johnson looked good. He wasn't outpaced for Fortuna's second goal, just started too central and forward, as was having to intercept the bloke coming through the middle as well as cover the right. Left him too much ground to make up - but still nearly caught the bloke. Hirst (and Ladapo) definitely provided more of an outlet up top then Delap. Harness was very lively.

To summarize, Delap not good, we all expected that though, very odd signing. THe rest.. ok. Give me 17th!

Thanks for the balanced summary. Delap is the one that worries me, guess he’ll be on the bench mainly though.

Whatever; he played well. There is a sea-change in his demeanour and sharpness. I think he will flourish in the premiership.

I wouldn't say Delap was actually bad. IIRC we were told he is not really suited to the lone striker role, so effectively playing out of position. He's also still young and not yet the finished article. I think there was a fair bit of experimentation/familiarisation going on yesterday, plus having as-yet unfilled holes in our intended Prem squad. Facing a side who are league-ready for next weekend (with a very talented player in Tanaka). We didn't give a bad account of ourselves, for all that.
