Some observations on Saturday 08:35 - Jul 30 with 3039 viewsIPSWICHFANITFC

- Liked the look of Muric. In terms of replacing Hladky, I think we've recruited well here. Of course, I'm only basing it off 45mins but stylistically, we have like for like replaced which is important for continuity of our build up play.

- Greaves looks like a good/solid defender. Aerially quite strong & comfortable on the ball. Wasn't tested in a foot race from memory but to sign another left footed CB and now have two good left sided CB's with similar attributes is another sign of good recruitment.

- Sam Morsy and Marcus Harness looked sharp and sharper than the rest.

- We knew this last season but without Davis, we lose a lot of attacking input and energy down the left. I'd like us to sign another left footed full back/winger who can cover.

- Delap looks like he's got the tools that just need piecing together. I like his movement off the ball. I thought his link up play was hit and miss in the half he played but he looks like a good long term investment.

- Number 4 for Dusseldorf played really well. Good energy, always showed for the ball, could pop it off quickly or carry it forwards. Good player.

On your fifth point, concerning Delap.

I wasn't there on Saturday, so I'm just going off what you've said. But does that not sound a lot like Hutchinson at the same point last season? Clearly talented, but needing someone to help him turn his constituent parts into a solid unit.

If that's the case, then Delap's development over the next twelve months could be rather exciting to watch.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Definitely. I'm not being critical and forming an opinion based on 45mins, but the 45mins I did see I liked what I saw overall, but there was some loose ends to tie up.

It's pre season anyway, plus he will be a week or so behind the others fitness wise but I thought Hirst had better link up play, but Delap had better movement.

In 12 months Delap could be a real handful if it all pieces together so he's an exciting player to have and watch develop.

Morsy looks ultra fit. Almost played back to back 90 mins now ?

I think in regards to Leif we really need that left winger/left 10 in ASAP. Too much work for Leif if he hasn't got good support with him on that side.

Morsy has an incredible engine on him. I still think back to his one man press against Southampton in the final minute when the team were out on their feet. Southampton ended up back with their goalie.

Muric does look good although I'm not entirely convinced he is in complete control of the ball all of the time. I also worry someone will try and do him from distance when he comes out to play as the 3rd CB. I worry a lot though....

Greaves is very very good. He will be our first £40m+ sale

I thought he looked very sharp and that's a credit to how he looks after himself.

Yeah we do need to get a left sided 10 in the building, which will help Leif's game. But I'm more worried about an injury or suspension, we don't have a replacement and without that replacement, the whole dynamic changes down the left.

It's a hard position to sell to a player knowing they're not getting into the 11 because of Davis, which is why I feel it needs more of a full back/winger player who is comfortable as maybe playing as a left sided 10 too - but the more complex we look at the detail, the harder it is to recruit a specialist for that.

Yup. Clearly a proper strong and quick athlete with good touch and good movement. KMc will get a lot out of him, I'm sure.

I still don't understand why a Championship club didn't pick him up when he left Boro.

I think as Muric settles with the team he will not be as far up the pitch as on Saturday, think he was very keen to be involved etc.

The further he pushed up, the more the space we like to capitalize on is reduced as the play is compressed- I think he will be playing a little deeper (sweeper vs centre back) so as to create a little more space to pass along the back and create opportunities to exploit.

I think he'll play where McKenna wants him to play tbh, I don't think we need to worry too much about his positioning.

My one take from the friendly was that without Hutchinson (and Sarmiento) we lacked that little bit of magic. Players to take on and beat a man with skill/pace.

I hope we can get someone like that to back up Omari - our interest in the likes of Odobert gives me hope. But in all honesty I don't see us paying £25m fo him.

Or, why Boro & Warnock let such a good player go.
Drawing conclusions from pre season friendly games is usually unwise. I remember seeing Town put up a decent performance against West Ham in the showpiece friendly under the ill fated Hurst regime & I thought we'd do fine & that Ellis Harrison looked a great signing.

Let's just say, Boro's hierarchy were none to pleased with Morsy's views on vaccinations of a certain type.

If I remember correctly , Morsy started following us on Twitter soon after Paul Cook came in.

Morsy , Walton and Lee Evans were all part of the Paul Cook Wigan team that finished 18th in the championship.

A look at the team when Leeds played Wigan at the end of that season on 19th April 2019 shows all three in the line up that won at Elland Road. The season we went down without a fight.

If anyone remembers the Wigan win against Manchester City in the Fa cup 5th round ( was on tv) a season earlier when Wigan won league 1 under Cook, the team sheet shows one Christian Walton in goal that day.

Safe to say Paul Cook as well as the new owners and salary we would have offered were all contributing factors in why not just Morsy but the other two signed for us.
