It's not necessary to close the door on it, you can just line up other options too and see what happens first.
The problem is when you count too much on one signing and don't make any contingencies. |  | | |

Agreed we don't need to close the door on it. I am sure we are already working on plan B, and, if not, we should be - if that looks like succeeding we then decide if we still prefer Szmodics over the plan B option, in which case, we give blackburn a now or never ultimatum.
Also agree we have been caught waiting too long before - this is starting to have a philogene feel about it - albeit, in this case the player wants to join us.
Blackburn will be in sticky situation if it collapses and Szmodics loses out on chance to play in Prem.
From what i have read:
- Our interest only started this summer when Szmodic's agent contacted us. We must have had alternative targets before this happened.

It might be complicated for Blackburn if Leeds are willing to pay more, but the player wants to move close to his family and play in the Premier League.

Szmodics will get sorted… if we want it to. The player wants out and by all accounts is training on his own away from the group. For the sake of haggling over half a million here and there, we’ll get it done if we want to.
My suspicion is that SS isn’t our prime target and we are working on another deal with SS as the back up in case that doesn’t happen. Why else with all our money would we be haggling so much over an 8-9m fee when we’ve spent 60m this summer already? |  | | |

Every deal that we make signals to agents and other mangers how we are going to approach negotiation. If we accept overinflated valuations to get the deals over the line we will just get taken to the cleaners. Obviously, there is a balance to be had because we wouldn't want to miss out on a player by a few thousand pounds if we really wanted him. They have to have a number at which the deal no longer makes sense so they would walk away. It is unfortunate where certain players are. Most clubs are much easier to deal with than Blackburn and it makes it even harder that it is their star player.

I doubt that is the case, i think Ashton does treat the money as if it his own and is respectful with it. It is very easy to spend £100 million but getting the next £100 may not come around so quickly | |

Naturally, very frustrating the way Blackburn seem to go about their business. That said, when the Gallagher deal failed to go through in January, we landed Moore instead and I'm not sure we could have done any better than him as it turned out. Thought he did really well for us.
