....share the comment that they are complaining about people seeing. People like to get angry. It gives them something to get angry about. And makes them angrier.

Absolutely this! I hardly used it anyway, but have taken the step to delete the app from my phone following the events of the last couple of weeks I can't imagine i'll miss it and will be much happier knowing that I have one less thing associated with Musk

Not anger, just amusement that he is so gullible and so easily played/used by the thickest on the planet [Post edited 8 Aug 2024 16:13]

Even if they're being deliberately extreme to drum up more clicks and engagement?

I came off Twitter yesterday after some of Musk's recent posts. It's undoubtedly got worse since he took it over. The reason I stayed on as long as I did is that for me it was a one-stop place to catch up on things. It's not really 'social' media for me but somewhere I can catch up on the news, sport, the latest TV drama etc. without having to go through various websites. I'd find out about gigs from my local record shop or when ITFC tickets go on sale. By being careful about who I followed, which posts I liked and marking other posts as not relevant, my For You feed was generally pretty good. It was easy enough to avoid some of the content that I wasn't interested in. However, I got to thinking why is Elon Musk trying to troll the Prime Minister of the UK? One option is he wants people to think he's funny (one thing he can't buy), the other is that he needs to boost engagement in order to bring advertisers back to Twitter. If amplifying conspiracy theories is the only way that he can achieve these things then Twitter is no longer for me. It sucks honestly, as I don't have an alternative that offers the same things. I'm back to going through different websites and probably having to subscribe to more email newsletters to get my information.

Especially because of this. It is incredibly damaging to have a social network trumpeting out fake news disguised as fact, even if you don't personally have a Twitter account. There is a *direct* correlation between Twitter and the far right (riots and all). | | | | Login to get fewer ads

But engagement just gives it more attention and helps spread the message Yes, challenging things is the morally right thing to do, but in the case of online super trolls such as Musk you're just making his reach bigger

It's the only place I can get a quick & understanding response from a whole host of companies whose products & services have let us down badly, ranging from energy suppliers to couriers. Only use it as a last resort when conventional methods have failed - companies that don't have cs phone lines, or email, or whose 'chat' is an epic fail, or who don't reply to emails within a week. Also belong to niche communities like dog owners; The Archers listeners etc. (yeah, sad! ). Most importantly, as I've said before, if all the decent people leave, there'll be no-one to stand up to musk & other rubbish & hate-spewing a'holes.

I have also deleted my personal Twitter account and whilst I understand the argument that by leaving, the extremists win; I disagree. We know all too well from this site that you never win an argument with a stranger on the internet - there is definitely no chance on a platform seething with bots and wilful misinformation. I don't need it in my life - let them shout at each other in their echo chamber. I'm happy to counter them elsewhere.

Where did I say that “by leaving, the extremists *win*”? I said that they need to be perennially pulled up and challenged on their vile views.

Apologies, that's the tone of a number of people - not specifically you. The point stands though. You cannot achieve anything by attempting to 'pull up and challenge' a stranger (who may not even exist) on Twitter

Thanks. Disagree with your second paragraph though. I think it’s important to keep doing that, and to keep adding community notes providing context and fact-checks, whoever “they” are or aren’t. [Post edited 8 Aug 2024 19:43]
