walking from Man Picadilly to the Etihad 15:45 - Aug 19 with 7758 views | Alan_Handsome | I am going to the match on Saturday on my own and was planning to walk the journey from the railway station to the ground as it's only 1.5 miles. Does anyone know if it is a safe walk, or would the walk from the station to the ground be through any rough areas? It's essentially walking along the A662. Thank you in advance.

walking from Man Picadilly to the Etihad on 17:11 - Aug 19 with 6554 views | Mullet | It’s very well policed on a match day. Usual rules apply, don’t be a dickhead, don’t give anyone a reason to start something and don’t go wandering off essentially. I know a few get brave behind a police line, but there’ll be none of that and these days the Etihad is still fairly family orientated. Piccadilly gardens itself is fairly ropey at times, a lot of the regions homeless have ended up there, spice especially is an issue and there was some particularly nasty scenes at the recent “protest” but its reputation is way worse than the reality.

This is correct, the Ashton line has a stop directly in front of the Etihad and can be accessed from the stop in Piccadilly under the station. the walk is a mooch won't lie but safe.

Planning on tramming up to the ground and walking back (from/to Piccadilly) - not sure there’s much going for away pubs near the ground is there? Thinking the fanzone must allow fans in.

Droylsden is only a couple stops after the station, could try your luck in some of the pubs there. Unfortunately most of the land around the Etihad is industrial sites really. There is a maccies and big Asda across from the stadium. But I would probably say best bet of a pub before the game is most likely droylsden really. Unless you are fine with paying the extortionate prices for the numerous kiosks around the ground

No there’s not. I’m going to drink in the northern quarter by the station as I have 1 or 2 friends who are fussy about their beers (London innit).

Not that fussed about a pub beforehand to be honest as with kids (12 and 6) so plan is just to head up to the ground early, have a look around and take it in (Done the Etihad as a neutral before and it’s really not all that - no aura about it unlike Old Trafford)

It isn't worth tramming back, as the queues are long, and the tram stop is the far side of the ground from the away end. Besides, it is mostly a downhill walk back. I don't know of any away-ok pubs within a mile of the ground, but most Northern Quarter pubs & bars are OK. (The excellent Port Street Beer House doesn't usually allow football colours at all).

Was wondering about queues on the way back so that’s good to know. Can’t be worst than the scrum to get on a team after a game at Hillsborough, such an awful system (or lack of) in place there. 25 min walk / from the ground sounds quite nice after 3+ hours on a train!

Usual rules probably apply… no colours or acting like an idiot. If a door person asks just say you’re not off to the football.

The away end seems nearer to the Velopark tram stop which is one stop to the east of the stadium. I wonder if queues are better from there, as after the game you would be getting on the tram one stop before the Etihad Campus stop. Does anyone have experience of this?

Don't have experience of the Manchester trams but as Hillsborough was mentioned earlier in the thread here's what happened to me and my son the season before last in Sheffield. Having queued and not got on three trams at the stop nearest the ground the season before we decided to walk the previous stop. That stop is where the trams start so they're pretty much empty at that point. All good, wasn't a long walk, got a seat and watched the chaos unfold at the stop nearest the ground. However when we got to our destination in the middle of Sheffield (by the university) we couldn't get to the exit door in time so had to get off at the next stop. Not the end of the world but a bit frustrating nonetheless.

Good info, thanks. As for getting off, I have to go to almost the last stop on the line, so shouldn't be a problem.
