If we’re covering ourselves I have absolutely no issue with this, hope we get someone of equal calibre in though.

Club are doing the right thing 100%.

Sure we have other options. Think our bid for the Greek fella was the right price but he didn’t want to go ? Wonder if we could get that one over the line.

He's due to sign a new deal with Panathinaikos so we better act quickly!

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Trust the club to do the right thing should there be issues, but gutted if it doesn't happen. While not a prolific goal scorer, he has all the raw ingredients to be a perfect McKenna number 9. Like Hirst on steroids.

Not a Mummy. Don't have short arms.

Ominous that we have follow up stories on Clarke & O'Shea this morning, but nothing on Broja, who was way ahead of both a couple of days ago.
Maybe Fotis Ioannidis, a bit like O'Shea, will have been impressed by the ambition of our signings since he originally considered us to be likely relegation fodder a few weeks back, & therefore was not interested in coming here?

Must be over the £30m move if we stay up. Just drop that bit, what if we stay up and he's rubbish this season? These clauses are stupid. If Chelsea disagree then go for someone else.

I read it as an issue with agreeing a future contract with Broja, rather than anything to do with Chelsea?

Agree, as per the tweet, but I presume the obligation clause is at Chelsea's insistence not ours, and you don't want to be shelling out £30m on someone at risk of retiring in 12 months if the medical shows that risk.

The bit about it being a stupid idea in the first place as a player may not settle here or be rubbish is just my personal opinion, Ipswich have clearly agreed to the clause.

Apologies, I see what you mean.

I don't mind the idea of the clause itself - Cajuste's looks great - but not at £30m. For that reason, I wouldn't be devastated if the deal falls through. At £20m or less? Far better.

Yes it's all about risk isn't it - you would think that a fee agreed immediately (for any player) would be higher than an obligation fee paid in 12 months (even accounting for Chelsea's risk of not getting anything if we go down), but I doubt anyone is willing to pay >£30m for Broja now.

But it's all speculation at the moment, the tweet infers it could be Broja's potential wages next season that is the stumbling block, which presumably were already agreed before the medical, so it points to the medical showing something that we feel needs re-negotiation.

The Guardian article sounds like a Chelsea leak.

Of course the issue would be with Ipswich if there are concerns re his medical. Chelsea won't be bothered.

We can't sign up to a £30m commitment if there are any doubts, not sure anyone else will either.

Might still get done, although I'm not convinced Broja was that up for it anyway.

We need everyone fully motivated.

For £30m, you’d hope for better too?

Not saying he’s not a good player, but there are significant doubts over whether he would have the impact we’d expect based on his previous loan spells

Why do they keep saying paperwork issues? Paperwork is just filling forms in. If the pen runs out, get another one. They don't mean paperwork issues, they mean there is not yet an agreement on his contract. So say "contractual issues".

One way or another, this potential signing has always had an auro of doubt about it, from the Everton connection to the player himself seeming to need a lot of persuasion to even consider us. There just seem to be too many niggly worries about it that have now accumulated into a pile with a bad aura about it.

Think sometimes you have to trust the flow if it's saying 'no'.

Fair comment, at £30m you don't want any fitness doubts.

At £15m, we may have taken a gamble. But there is limited upside at £30m.

Sounds like the deal started with contract terms to be agreed next summer as a way of pushing the loan and difficult discussions to next summer but perhaps expectation with the obligation to buy was to sort that in advance and that’s where there is misalignment on future wage level.

For us he’s achieved nothing and he should prove / earn that wage level rather than be given before anything is delivered. All about certainty of the deal - I’m guessing massively. If his representatives feel they can negotiate better wages elsewhere before he’s delivered anything good for them, he’s not for us.

This could go full circle of course once all options have been assessed but isn’t sounding promising this morning.

Why a Chelsea leak?

The leaks have been more of a flood out of Portman Road over the past 24 hours or so. Would expect that hasn't helped.

Either way, now it's been picked up by others it seems our local journos are allowed to report on it too so would seem like this one is pretty unlikely

I would imagine that the truth is both. The medical issue has implications for insurance and future risk, which town wanted reflected in the obligation or payment scheduling that Chelsea didn't want to do.

Sounds like it's both failure to agree money and medical at play here.

Given it would be a club-record signing, I'm more than happy to move on to someone who ultimately wants to play for the club.

It would also mean we get that domestic loan back which might given a different avenue to explore.
