Tom Fellows on 15:19 - Aug 29 by tractorboy1978 | No, we didn't. We had a squad of 25 players, the same as we will do this season. |
Pedantic. I obviously don't mean in terms of squad size, i mean lean in terms of ego, ambition, expectation, complimentary attributes, transfer value etc. All the stuff around it. Assembling a team of International stars very quickly is completely different to growing a team of Championship quality players from L1 to the PL over 2 and a half seasons.

Assembling a team of international stars?! If anything, we're growing a team of elite Championship level players from the Champ to the PL over nine months, as that's our best chance of staying up and getting a foothold in the league.

In fairness we did accumulate a large number of attacking options last season and the season before, while a young Fellows would hopefully not bring a great ego with him if the unexpected happens. We didn't have enough room on the bench for Harness from around February with last winter's additions. The only international star we've signed in the true sense is Phillips, but he's been the butt of the joke among footy circles for some time (courtesy of Gareth and Pep's decision to sign him) so has every reason to be grounded like the rest of them.

In some cases their wages have grown so significantly following the two promotions that they make deals difficult to do unless Town were willing to accept them leaving for nothing.

Tom Fellows on 13:58 - Aug 29 by portmanking | The only thing I've wondered is if we're managing to sell a couple of players for reasonable money. Let's say Edmundson goes to Boro for £4m and Harness goes somewhere for £1.5m. All of a sudden, you're getting Fellows for £6m-£7m. It may be that the club think that's a deal too good to miss. |
Please share some of whatever you're taking in the world that Edmundson is worth £4m ahaha | | | | Login to get fewer ads

....a symptom of us getting promoted so quickly, but we certainly do seem to keep (essentially) giving our players away. Yes we replace them with better, but something isn't right about constantly giving away players that have been part of previous years promotion efforts. It's not a perfect business model!

Got to be honest, i'd be dissapointed if we sold Fridge for anything less than we paid with so many clubs interested in him.

I'd argue any full international is a star given they're 1 of 25 players chosen to represent their country but appreciate the term has been distorted over years to be the very pinnacle of the elite within an international team.

Tom Fellows on 14:58 - Aug 29 by portmanking | I don't understand why you're so against us signing quality young players? If he's available at a price we can afford, he's a no-brainer. Half-decent season in 24/25 for us would double his value instantly. |
This seems to be entirely driven by his agent with Town having no interest at all.

It is and it isn't. If we've got players we're not going to play, then getting their wages off the books is obviously a positive even if we don't get fees. Think we'd like fees if possible, but probably isn't going to be the case in some cases.

We can only get what the market says they're worth. Basically, we overachieved with a bunch of league one players. Mostly we've retained (for the moment) the regulars from last season. The ones who have gone for nowt were fringe players. With the exception of Hladky who was out of contract. [Post edited 29 Aug 2024 15:52]

Edmundson's not a League One defender. The fact he's got 5 Champ clubs after him suggests otherwise. Surely we can get seven figures for him?!

When you're competing in the PL it doesn't gain you entry into the 'after-party' tbh, let alone the VIP area. Incidentally Tom has only recently been become part of the international scene - England U20s.
