I know it’s early in the season to be thinking this but…

Is it a bit worrying that our two best midfielders over the last two seasons are now on the wrong side of 30 and the two who we’ve got in to replace/complement them are both loans?

If Phillips and Cajuste do well will we be first in line to sign them at the end of the season? Would we be able to afford them both?

This is assuming we will stay up of course.

There's an obligation to buy Cajuste when we stay up so that's one slot filled.

Even if Phillips loves it here, etc I think it's unlikely we'd be able to do a deal with him, mainly down to wages more than anything else.

Re Phillips I guess it depends on which European competition we’ll be playing in next season

Re phillips, if he loves it here and we stay up could see many reasons why he would potentially love to stay longer. Why leave a club youve loved playing for, top class manager who has shown complete trust in you just for a bit more money when he will already have plenty in the bank. Some things are more important than cash, a playing career is short so may as well enjoy it rather than just looking at the wonga

Not particularly – we go down, we have to rebuild a little anyway via a couple of big sales. We stay up and we probably wouldn't be out of the financial market for Phillips, think we'll be able to turn the taps on a little. And if he went elsewhere you'd trust that we can find a very decent alternative.

That's a relatively easy issue to solve regardless of which division we're in, but for now the only consideration is having enough quality & depth for the next 34 games.

No problem. If we stay up we'll be in a good position to strengthen next summer, and I'd hope we would do that even if the two loans were our own players. Thought we were obligated to buy Cajuste but it may be an option. Phillips is on the contract of a lifetime and I wouldn't be surprised if he sees it out, moving on loan each season until 27/28 or whenever it finishes.

The only thing that matters at the moment is this season, where we are well covered in midfield. Nothing to discuss, move on.

Nah, we are better than that now. He made it very clear that he wanted Southampton, so let him go back to the Championship with them.

It’ll be fine.

If we stay up then next years transfer budget can be spent on 3-4 really excellent players, rather than basically one for every position.

We might not be able to get Phillips permanently, but we will have plenty of financial muscle, an outstanding manager (fingers crossed) and will hopefully be able to demonstrate we are within striking distance of being a club like Brentford/Brighton.

Consequently I’d expect a couple of pretty big signings. We’ve done the hard work getting a young talented squad. Next season will be icing on the cake stuff,

If we stay up.

Why focus on age versus ability? Would you turn down the chance to sign De Bruyne and Gundogan?

I would be more concerned if we had a number of midfielders aged 35+, but we don't.

With respect to our midfielders, they are not world class as the 2 you have mentioned are. If the 2 you mentioned dropped off by 10%, then you would hardly notice as they are that good. As long as they are good enough, then age isn't a problem. We have enough for this season, so no worries.

I agree with those who say there's no need to worry.

The other point I would add is that as I recall, the Cajuste deal was said to include an option/obligation to purchase, on certain conditions being fulfilled. So the fact that he is a loan may just not matter.

We don't know the terms of the Phillips loan, but if he does well, he may well want to stay. It didn't work for him at Man City. It didn't work for him at West Ham. He may see the importance of being in the right ecosystem with the right coaching at the right kind of (and size of) club.

Would love him to stay if we are still PL next season. How much would City/Phillips want?

Some interesting responses. Had missed that there was an obligation to buy Cajuste so thanks for that.

Perhaps if KMc helps get his career back on track he may prefer to stay & take a pay cut. As not many clubs will match what he's on at the moment from City

If we stay up our loans are likely to have done well and we will be in a stronger position to buy permanent quality players.

Lovely stuff.

Maybe we could put it next to Wes Burns' pony tail and Ian Marshall's mullet in the club museum?
