Brandon Williams 09:07 - Sep 17 with 10048 views | Chris_ITFC | https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5764645/2024/09/17/brandon-williams-manchester- “Over time, however, information started to get back to United, revealing that he had not been living his life in the way that would ordinarily be expected of a professional sportsman. Erik ten Hag, United’s manager, had already decided that Williams was not for him, but the club were alarmed by what they heard. There was evidence of a young man who had started to lose his way and was not listening to the right people. All sorts of hangers-on had attached themselves to Williams, as often happens with young United stars, and perhaps he was not worldly or experienced enough to appreciate it might not always have been good for him.” “ At the end of the season, however, he did plan to join the Ipswich players on a trip to Las Vegas that had been arranged to celebrate promotion and, as such, was never going to be a quiet affair. Ipswich got wind of it and, collectively, it was decided that Williams’ involvement would not be a good idea in the circumstances. This story, above all, maybe sums up his jumbled priorities at a time when he is also trying to rescue his career.”

Hopefully he's able to get back to fitness, put his problems behind him and find a decent club. Top-level player if he wants to be.

Shame that such a talent should be out of control. But he is not the first and I doubt he will be the last but these days clubs tend to be more carefull with their assets. But I suppose if you are Man Utd you have bigger fish to fry. Probably a sink or swim atitude to your players. Not the Ipswich way.

If only someone would invent something called paywall remover and you could copy the link, search for said remiver in Google, paste it in and read the article. That would be something wouldn't it.......

Yes, it paints quite a pessimistic picture of that prospect, which is quite something given his obvious talent: “He could, of course, join another club at any time now he is a free agent. But that is not on the cards, which is hardly a surprise given Williams was often an absentee on United’s training pitches in his last six months at the club.”

To be fair, media outlets still need to make an income (at a time when ad revenues are falling). Just a shame they don't have a scheme whereby you can pay a small amount to read one article, or maybe a small number within the space of a few weeks. But that would probably cost more to set up than it brought in.

Well in this case, The Athletic is basically always available for £1 a month. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/checkout2/intro1/

Brandon Williams on 10:44 - Sep 17 with 7076 views | NedPlimpton | I was hoping the article might put a bit more meat on the bone as to his troubles and what was really going on when he was "injured" here, but interesting nonetheless With regards to this bit - "Ipswich got wind of it and, collectively, it was decided that Williams’ involvement would not be a good idea in the circumstances". I wonder who made that decision and whether the players actually wanted him there or not?

Interestingly this story came up on my google suggested list of news stories for me to read, which somehow managed to then avoid the paywall. Not sure sure how or why.

Yes, agreed. I dare say that might follow once there isn’t a live legal case to go prejudice.

Re "not the Ipswich way" - these things are never nailed down forever. Weak management / leadership can quickly change the environment, although the more "good characters" you have in the building, the greater the hope. But, for reference, ask an older supporter about the rumours that rolled around the Town following Town's recently resurrected 10-1 Boxing Day drubbing at Fulham, in regard to scenes around the Manor club/ ballroom as was. Those rumours may have been exaggerated, but the 4-2 reversal two days later suggests maybe not. The Ipswich way can only reflect the current, prevailing ethos, as with any other mindset. It's great that we are in a good place regarding these things, but without watchfulness and good stewardship things can change quickly. In evidence, I give you the Man Utd of Busby and Ferguson - different characters for sure, but neither likely to tolerate too much disorder in the ranks.

It was a players organised trip wasn’t it? I read that as meaning he was going to be joining the group (so presumably the players were ok with it and happy to have him there) but someone within the club got wind of it and put a stop on it Could be wrong, and quite possible of course that some players may have been ok but others uncomfortable with it

Appreciate that & subscribe to the Gruadian annually. As for the rest, as you say, am not gonna subscribe at even £1/month when I might only want to read two articles per year.

Christ, that would be £6 per article assuming you never bothered to check back in again. That's not exactly cheap, but honestly how much do people think journalism is worth these days?!

Interesting How much is it actually worth considering the impact of AI, the sheer volume of nonsense out there and the decreasing quality of sports journalism in general (not including the athletic in this) Also it's not just a news subscription. It's all the other subscriptions that we now have in our lives in general! Probably healthy for people to limit their subscriptions before getting tied in and prices get hiked up

I pay approx £100/year for the Gruadian, & consider that well worth it. Articles like the one linked here are just mild interest only, I don't consider them crucial, there's plenty out there that are free (with ads), so the ones that require me to pay (as you say) £6 to read, I just ain't gonna bother with baby!

I see this argument a lot - people complaining about the drop in standards of journalism (I agree, by the way) and lamenting the introduction of AI (I agree, by the way), while complaining about having to pay for it. When I started as a journalist in 2004, the pay was pretty crap - hence why I'm no longer in journalism. Today, the pay is almost exactly the same as I was getting, only the journalists are expected to write for 6 publications at once and churn out 20 articles a day for online because ad clicks are the only source of income. Honestly, I despair at how appalling most journalism is nowadays, but we've only got ourselves to blame.
