Do you ever see a piece of art on 22:34 - Sep 20 with 2704 views | VanSaParody | "Art" in my opinion, these days seems not to be of such great quality in terms of any talent by the "artist", more that it's got to provoke a reaction, especially if it can provoke a divisive reaction For example, the effort in the BBC link is dreadful I don't care about the subject matter or what the artist is trying to say, but just the technical drawing or painting is poor & demonstrates the artist's lack of talent I have greater appreciation if someone can draw or paint something that looks so accurate, it looks like a photo of, or even the actual real thing Another example is our very own Sir Bobby Robson statue The artist who produced our one, compared to whoever produced the Sir Bobby statue at Newcastle's ground, as they clearly can't sculpt hands! I also think stencilling is cheating

Do you ever see a piece of art on 03:54 - Sep 21 with 2554 views | Ryorry | Yes, saw a small oil painting (about 12 inches by 10) of a Suffolk landscape - pond and tree in a field at sunset, in a shop in Ipswich c. 1973. Immediately loved it, wanted it, but £50 just felt too much for my student budget at the time. Often think about that lovely little gem - there was just something about it - & have regretted my decision ever since!

Sometimes art can be found in many forms! An Aston Martin DB9 or an Indian Scout (motorcycle circa 1950's) are good examples, too

Do you ever see a piece of art on 10:57 - Sep 21 with 2303 views | Churchman | If I could possess one piece of art it’d be this: https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/the-hireling-shepherd-205245 I could bore for England on this, knowing a little about the painting, the story/lesson it is telling, the artist, Pre-Raphs etc etc, but whatever ‘it’ is, this has it and is my favourite painting.

You haven't seen a lot of art if that's your opinion of art. I suspect you've mostly seen art that gets on the news... which by its very nature would be more about controversy than anything else. When was the last time you went to an art gallery? Or viewed art (in any setting) by local artists? In terms of what art is supposed to do then you're perfectly entitled to want to see art that accurately represents something. Art, though, is obviously so much more than that. Good art, for me, should provoke a reaction, an emotion. Competent artists who can accurately depict something are ten-a-penny. Creating something that moves people is a whole different kettle of fish (and being accurate is far removed from the point).

EH Gombrich says there is no such thing as art, just artists. Hope that helps.

This is a fantastic piece of work. Beautiful. One of Mr Turner’s finest. He was fascinated by change, the Industrial Revolution etc, the good and the potentially bad. You don’t need to read a book about the Industrial Revolution, its effects on past, present and future. It’s all here. The Temeraire was a very famous ship that played a key role at Trafalgar in 1805. JMWT allegedly witnessed it being towed to be broken up in the 1830s. Yet here it is in the edge of the painting. A ghostly image not of how it looked as it was being towed, but the powerful First Rate that it was. History being superseded. Fire, power, progress - a small tug towing a big ship, while sailing ships in the background are still through lack of wind, darkness, the unknown to come. Ok, he took a lot of licence with how this scene would actually have looked, but who cares.
