I don't think there's any need for these threads to continually return to abuse and misrepresentations. Those that continue won't be welcome on here. As I've said, I've got a lot on away from here at the moment, so don't need the hassle.

Firstly, hope you are ok Phil.
Even in the original thread and the absolute bashing I took I wouldn't bother using the abuse reported button - it's the internet, people post stuff that might be disagreed with but obviously the button is being abused by people who are overly sensitive.
Maybe it's time to remove it and trust that we can all be adult enough to get on with it. |

And even X has a button which enables you to completely block abusive people, which means they can't even read your posts let alone interact with you again in future, so you can in effect be your own moderator. You can also report posts which break X's community rules, which leads X;s mods to investigate that post.
In fact I don't think I've ever seen a single forum on the net which doesn't have some kind of button for flagging up abuse - even pages reviewing goods sold by supermarkets or other online shopping sites have them. |  |

I think 99% of posters are and don't/haven't, since the site's inception some 25 years ago.
Thing is that it's probably fewer than a couple of dozen people over those decades (plus a few unimportant trolls who are easily dismissed/ignored) who've disrupted the forum disproportionately in being deliberately/knowingly/uncaringly malign in their attacks on others.They've had a ripple-out effect on the tone & atmos because people angered by being falsely labelled as something despicable, are quite likely to lash back angrily, so "history" between individuals is built up; & it spirals.
Re Strikalite's moderator idea, that might necessitate employing a neutral, which perhaps wouldn't be financially viable. [Post edited 23 Sep 2024 5:37]

You ask if Phil is OK (which I echo), then ask him to remove a button which he has said innumerable times is something that cuts down his workload, as he/Gav/Mark can’t read every thread.
And absolutely no one should have to put up with defamation, being told they’re a Nazi sympathiser, a sociopath etc etc. |
I do think some people are a little hasty to hit the "I'm telling teacher" button - I see 'abuse reported' on a fair few posts that definitely fall short of the definition just because someone didn't like it. We Brits are surprisingly censorius bunch overall.
Maybe just think "do I really need to bother Phil with this, or can I just cope?" next time. |  |

No one wants to chat on X. Absolute revolting minefield of blurgh but that isn't here really.
I understand your point, only raised a suggestion in light that it was being abused. Obviously no-one here wants to see anything untoward or shared. I'd like to think that we all have something in common that we can be kind (relatively) to each other that the button isn't required but I understand the need for it's existence, particularly if it does help moderation etc. |  | | |

I think their downfall was when they were trying to develop some quirky kind of pothole avoidance sensor. It was being quite troublesome in testing. I understand Bury St Edmunds was one of the local testing sites... |  |
