My choice would be some early Jethro Tull, Nick Drake or any Cat Stevens from 1970 -1972. Failing that try some Pentangle or anything from the Flying Burrito Brothers.

If you like a more contemporary chilled vibe, try Tosca by Suzuki. I'll give a second shout out for Nick Drake. 5 leaves left is a good place to start. Also the debut by Crosby, Stills and Nash is a think of beauty. One of my favourite artists is Matt Deighton. I have all his albums. Many are acoustic focused. I can't recommend highly enough his debut solo album - Villager. Joyous and chilled.
Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Pleasantly surprised to find out yesterday that Andre 3000 had made a "no vocals" album last year.
New Blue Sun.
Worth a play as it fits nicely with the chilled background genre required.
Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

I found an old Cypress Hill CD the other day, which I've been listening to in the car. Not sure chilled is quite the right word, but some of the lyrics are a bit chilling.
