One thing I hate about the world we live in now 14:49 - Oct 23 with 2986 viewsBlueastheycome

Is news outlets using sensationalist headlines and words to describe incidents/events.

I.e. the evacuation of Birmingham airport.. with one news outlet using the word “chaos” as people are being evacuated from the terminals.

Here is a definition of chaos

a state of utter confusion or disorder
1. a state of utter confusion or disorder; a total lack of organization or order.

However, in the videos I’ve seen, people are complying with orders to evacuate and despite the natural sense of nervousness, they are responding in a calmly and orderly fashion to leave the terminals etc.

I do think we are often short changed by modern day news reporting and no wonder modern day society lives in a heightened state of hyper vigilance. Makes me wonder where it’s all going if we don’t all eat ourselves beforehand.

I have a friend who is retired journalist who held a senior position with a national newspaper

20 years ago he predicted the effect of rolling 24 hour news in that firstly news wouldnt stop be reported as 'fact' but sensationalised. Secondly news outlets, because of the time they have to fill. would stop reporting those 'facts' and start driving the story by speculating on how a story could developed so much so that speculation would become 'the fact'

Presumably there is a bit of chaos though with people separated from their luggage and their flights, diverted flights, facing the ghastly prospect of spending the night in Brum?

Personally I find the prevention of the news as ‘stories’ somewhat annoying - and the presentation of speculation as news weeks before an event - eg the budget.

The standard of modern news coverage today is so dumbed down and sensationalised it is embarrassing.

And don't even start me on giving a platform to the "general" public for comments, for example, on the BBC News site, one of the updates below in quotes, with terms such as "describe being stranded".

There has been a security alert at the terminal and are being held on places whjile on the tarmac FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY. They are not stranded, but being held on their planes with cabin crew - stranded means left without the means to move, not being prevented from moving under supervision. FFS, it boils my piss.

"Facebook users describe being stranded on tarmac during evacuation
published at 15:27
15:27
Frustrated travellers are weighing in on a Facebook post warning passengers to avoid the airport.
Some have described being struck on the tarmac, with passengers not allowed to disembark from their planes.
"Sat on a plane in the airport - been here an hour already," one user replies to the Birmingham Airport post.
"My mum is stuck on a plane on the runway in Birmingham on return from Spain. No one is allowed off plane," another adds."

I hate when they use breaking news for things that are entirely predictable.

BREAKING NEWS: ROYALS LAND IN AUSTRALIA

Well, they left Singapore 10 hours ago, so that's not really particularly surprising.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

The problem with rolling news is it becomes competitive, they are all trying to get the viewers and to do that, they have to be the most entertaining

There was an ex-SAS guy saying all the media turning up at this event (whatever the attack had been) is exactly what they want

But it's the reality of how they cover news now, sadly

I remember years ago watching CNN and they said “coming up after the break, we’ll have breaking news…”

By definition, if you’re going to a commercial break first, whatever news you’re selling is not breaking.

A former journalist friend used the example of the sudden closure of a Bury St Edmunds restaurant. The EADT simply copied and pasted what the restaurant's website said, and made no attempt to investigate further. At the very least, he said, in his day they'd have tried to speak to the business owner.

Why have journalists when you've got twitter?

A typical example of sensationalist journalism occurred back in 1976 - so it isn't just a modern phenomenon. When George Roper and his wife Mildred moved from their flat to a modern upmarket housing estate in Hampton Wick, the Molesey Evening News reported:- "FOURMILES GET NEW NEIGHBOURS - WILL THEIR HOME BE DEVALUED?" George even brought his motorbike and sidecar with him.

My chums and I were talking about this out in Spain last week and you are right. Headlines don’t match reality half the time. The same applies to strap lines on news articles. Sensational headline to get you reading it, nothing much by way of content or at least nothing that relates to it.

I think the media have a lot to answer for.

That's absolutely correct. When Mildred's brother-in-law Humphrey came to visit early in September 1976, his Merc was scratched outside the house.
