So I had a crash on my bike Tuesday Morning. 04:04 - Nov 8 with 8173 views | Benters | I was doing my usual circuits round Benters and the surrounding villages,I mostly keep to the same route in the winter months due to bad road conditions and pot holes etc. I was slowing down to turn left as I turned into the lane some kind of fluid probably Diesel from a lorry or farm machine had been spilled on the road,my front wheel went from under me and crash bang whallop over I went. Thankfully nothing is broken, just skinned my arm and leg also banged my head, that scared me as when I’ve fallen off before I’ve never hit my head. Still as Mark Cavendish would have done,I jumped up straightened my brake lever and carried on for a further 15 miles. I just wanted to say to people if you think you don’t need to wear a cycling helmet when you are cycling,my advise is you do.

So I had a crash on my bike Tuesday Morning. on 15:37 - Nov 9 by FrimleyBlue | Well you said you don't wear one and won't do until studys make you feel the need to. I appreciate the links you shared and they do make for good reading. But considering accidents happen anyway surely having protection on your head is just obvious isn't it? I just don't understand why someone would need a study to determin if they should wear a helmet. Absolutely each to their own and we share our debates on Here but I honestly would hate for anyone I've shared my time with on here to end up with a head injury just because they didn't feel they'd read a study that convinced them to. So defo wanted to share my thought on this. Don't take the risk. Imo |
I've nothing more to say on the matter. I've shared my reasoning and I've shared the evidence. If you can't understand it, that's on you. I'm in the minority, plenty have shared that you should wear a helmet so I'm not really sure what your post is offering other than to mock/attack me. People can take all the information and decide for themselves.

So I had a crash on my bike Tuesday Morning. on 14:42 - Nov 9 by NthQldITFC | Lockdown rides were FANTASTIC with minimal motorised traffic on the roads when all you could do was go out for your exercise - it wasn't just the road you were on being quiet, it was the fact that you couldn't even hear any internal combustion engines on bigger roads a field or two away. It was paradise for me, and a precious (if not entirely realistic!) view of what life might have been like in the early years of the twentieth century - before anyone starts, I know that's a heavily romanticised view, but so what. |
Lockdown cycling was an absolute joy - would cycle from South West to North East London every morning; one of my more random memories from that time is that bogies are actually meant to be green rather than black!

Absolutely people can decide for themselves Flash. I actually found what you posted early in the thread very interesting. I don’t necessarily agree with you but it’s good to hear (and respect) different viewpoints. I haven’t cycled for many years so I cant comment from that viewpoint. As a car driver, whether with or without a helmet I give a cyclist as much room as possible or wait. Last thing I want is a problem like that on my hands/conscience. Where I do have a sort of parallel is with skiing. I resisted wearing a helmet for years - they were not for ‘proper’ skiers. Then the numbers in the US grew higher and higher and I thought about insurance. How would I stand? Particularly as the previous season I’d had a big wipeout and narrowly avoided bashing the bonce. So I bought one. They are exactly the same as cycle helmets in construction albeit slightly different shape to accommodate goggles. It didn’t interfere with the senses (sight and ears) was warmer and altogether an upgrade on the beanie and hope for the best. Given construction, would it save me from the big one? No, it’s really just polystyrene in a shell, but it might give me a few percent better chance than a woolly hat. Is it the same for cyclists? I would guess yes, but I don’t know and it’s really for them to say. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

So I had a crash on my bike Tuesday Morning. on 10:35 - Nov 8 by Mookamoo | As a bit of side hustle, I'm a cycling instructor and I always wear one. I do know of a few instructors that don't, for the reasons in those articles and anecdotally, they find vehicles leave more space when they're not wearing a helmet. Personally I find having a pannier on the road side really helps so I cycle with one even if its empty. If people do wear a helmet, make sure it fits and isn't going to fly off when you need it. The straps are adjustable on purpose. And don't be clever and fit one of those cameras to the helmet to try and record dangerous driving. I know someone who was hospitalised when the fitting went through the helmet after a smack - and that is reportedly how Schumacher suffered head injuries. |
Very good point about the camera, I hadn't thought of that and have had half a mind to get one recently, to try to get evidence to prosecute some of the absolute a'hole motorists who clearly don't give a sht about the life of a damned impudent cyclist.

"No, it’s really just polystyrene in a shell" Bike helmets are a fantastically clever bit of design - the outer shell being smooth and shiny so the head will slide on tarmac in a crash (skid lid) to try to reduce the severity of neck injury, and the foam layer absorbs the energy at the point of impact and distributes it through the rest of the foam (if the helmet is being worn correctly) As I've mentioned earlier in the thread, I've had 2 occasions where my head has hit the tarmac following a crash; the construction of a bike helmet pretty much mirrors a human head...hard outer shell (skull), polystyrene foam (cerebrospinal fluid) and the thing inside that needs protecting (head / brain) I'm glad I chose on both occasions just to have to buy a new helmet and recover from minor injuries rather than nurse a fractured skull (or worse)

I have no idea what these things are made of, so apologies. All I know is my ski helmet cost an awful lot of money, was fitted, has the name ‘Giro’ on it and hasn’t had to be replaced fortunately. Edit: and a helmet basically saved the life of a former work colleague after she was hit by a Snowboarder and nearly died on the mountain (fractured skull) in France. [Post edited 9 Nov 2024 21:33]

No apologies necessary, and thanks for highlighting the need for wearing helmets in others sports where you put yourself at risk of brain injury - hope your work colleague made a good recovery from her accident. As you've seen, it's something I'm passionate about after being in accidents myself - few links posted on this thread already, so I'll add this one from Headway, The Brain Injury Association: https://www.headway.org.uk/news-and-campaigns/campaigns/cycle-safety/

I honestly think as I was going down hill and slowing up to turn left so I was probably doing 12 mph as I hit the road, bashing my elbow hip and head the helmet definitely saved me from at least concussion.
