Good Old Labour increasing the price of everything. 13:32 - Nov 20 with 33393 viewsOldFart71

Inflation up and rising. Costs to businesses up. Energy prices going up again in January. Not long ago I paid £68 per month for gas and electricity. In the winter I was able to have my heating on 1-1.1/2 hours in the morning, then again 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. I now pay £85 per month (Just increased by my supplier) and I have it on for two hours at night. Absolutely bonkers. Whilst I admit and I was just as p*ssed off as most people with the Tories, Labour have steam rollered in like a bull in a china shop and now costs are and will keep increasing by more than they needed to. Companies will cut costs by cutting hours or even laying people off. Will put prices up whilst giving lower wage increases. This in turn will lead to workers striking for higher pay. There's a saying "You can't burn the candle at both ends" Labour are trying to put all the ills made by the previous Government in one go. It is too much all at once and is already leading to many sections of our community taking to the streets or totally feed up with a Party that has only been in power a few months.

You think I can afford a month-long holiday (and Lady Dollers can take a month off work, unless you expect me to go alone?)

No, sorry, it's not practical for most people - albeit a bit more doable than me being allowed to run B&Q for a month.

And it's certainly more effort than I'd spend to win an argument on the internet!

Was that in Stowmarket?

I think my dad worked there around 1977.

I remember at the Christmas parties the presents us kids got from ICI were better than those from our parents!

Yes it was, I worked in the Central filling shop from 77 to 83 and then went to E-site resin plant in the filter bay. In or around 86 I got promotion to resin cook but after some back trouble I moved to the Engineering Stores where I stayed until 2001. I then went into the office upstairs above the workshop. It was originally the old general stores. I was responsible for buying engineering parts, tools etc. In 2002 I had completed 25 years so my then boss Andrew Cockshead brought me my congratulations letter from the manager. I asked him if there was any chance of redundancy which surprisingly he said that he had been told to get rid of two of his staff. So I took redundancy but luckily he asked me to sort out the Engineering stores and get rid of unwanted stock, so from the same desk I got another 10 months work paid through a contractor. Further to your comment on Christmas parties they were great. My Dad worked there and I got to go to the parties. There are books on Stowmarket and one of then shows a party in the 50's. I am slap bang in the middle of that picture. We had sandwiches, cakes and jelly and they had a mock chimney where Father Christmas gave you a present. I remember getting a torch one year that was like a rocket. Sadly where the canteen was has been converted into offices and they test spray things like car doors and stuff. I believe the original sprung dance floor is still underneath. They had great dinner dances with proper bands and the men would disappear into the bar at 10 p.m. to watch Match of the Day. Great times.

Only jesting Ry, yes I could probably live on a farm for a week. My point is, your original challenge of "Go and live on a farm for a month" was pretty unrealistic. And anyway, I don't disagree that they do hard work, so I'm not sure how much I'd learn from it re whether they should pay inheritance tax or not (if they qualify).

It would be perfectly possible for you to go and stay on a farm for a month; either as a holiday (many farmers have diversified to incorporate running B&Bs), or working. When I ran my organic smallholding for 15 years back in the day, I often had people staying for a few weeks or just a weekend (belonged to an organisation called ‘Working Weekends on Organic Farms).

You never know, you might find you enjoy it.

I'm 99% certsin that most people with little or no experience of agriculture would learn a great deal from staying on a (preferably mixed, traditional) farm for a few days, particularly from chats with the farmers over cornflakes or any other meals.

Edit - which reminds me - didn't get a reply from Mullet, not sure if he's on the thread. Anyone else know if agriculture & food production are on our schools' curriculum?

2-3 weeks on a 20 acre Leitrim hill/bog sheep farm would be an eye opener for most people.
I wouldn't drive after sharing the farmers porridge though..

Maybe this deserves a whole thread of its own as it's such a huge & complex issue, but this seems the right place for it atm.

Haven't had time to read & digest all of this myself yet, and it's presented in a stupidly hyperbolic form, but the implications are still worrying.

I can at least see the rationale behind attempting to integrate/ streamline services - not that it seems to be improving anything in N. Yorks, where a merge (edit - between Borough & County Councils) was implemented in Feb. this year.

Going back to the tweet about Sezs & Freeports - I gather from another TWTD thread that people without accounts on X can't see replies, so I hope this thread reader will sort that out. Most of the worthwhile replies are additional info & links from the OP, who's obviously done a lot of research, so it's worth a read I think.

So what we have learned so far in this thread is that after just one day in the job Dolly has caused Kingfisher to issue a profit warning which has rocked shares, sending them lower by 13%.

He has since moved on to farming and Amazon Prime is bringing out a new TV show called Dolly’s Farm, in which we will see Dolly putting the rubber gloves on to artificially inseminate his herd of cows, fall out of a tractor and fight with the council over planning permission for his farm shop.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over
