You'll find when fishing that too much of the same bland food eventually stops the fish from biting. You'll catch a few tiddlers for sure but the bigger ones like a bit more variety on the hook. Try another sport until the summer. They say football is quite good. [Post edited 22 Nov 2024 6:07]

I really hate this argument. France doesn't seem to struggle for tourists.

GSTK. on 08:53 - Nov 22 with 2715 views | Churchman | I think that pricing events like a coronation is easy. Assessing the true cost and revenue generated is almost impossible. Attended a lecture by the project manager for the staging for the 2012 Olympics and this very point was made. The only certainty was that it generated a considerable amount in spending, tourism, investment etc. As for the Coronation, I’m not in favour of monarchy as an institution, but if you have it in the form we do, then events like that are a part of it I guess. In terms of a Presidential inauguration, they cost about $100m according the internet. Do they generate any income in return? Less than Charlie’s hat-donning is my guess. As it goes, £72m is not a huge some of money, even if it doesn’t generate a penny, for this sort of thing and the question is really whether you have a constitutional monarchy or not. I know where I stand, but appreciate the alternative viewpoint on it - strengthened by the US electing a wart like the Trumpster. [Post edited 22 Nov 2024 8:54]

I don't disagree with hating the argument but not sure the comparison with France is any better. Our monarchy has a lot of appeal, particularly to the US market. France has also got nice sandy beaches and some guarentee of good weather, Blackpool less so.

It's hard to believe that tourists are rushing to the UK to see Charles or his paedophile brother

Without doubt a lot of tourists are drawn to the UK due to the history - and as the monarchy has been the centre point of history, it’s not hard to see why royal attractions are inundated with visitors. But like you, I doubt very much whether that many visit them due to Charles or to any other member of the royal family. I do think that as a country, most people are either apathetic towards them or mildly lukewarm towards them. I would ideally like to abolish them but that won’t happen anytime soon. Next best option is to reduce those considered royals and to tax them as if they are normal people. No overseas accounts, total financial transparency.

Fair point. I wonder how visitors coming specifically to see Buck House, Windsor Castle etc compare to former French royal residences like Versailles etc.

Life might well a tad “tougher” for him - especially as his mum is no longer around to pay off his alleged victims.

Apparently he can stay where he is if he can pay for his own security. If he can't he will have to slum it in the four bedroom, four bathroom Frogmore Cottage. Thoughts and prayers.

But those places would still exist - the Royal family would just become another rich aristocrat family like those in Europe. Difference would be they’d not have any hereditary power (however ceremonial), and pay taxes, and follow the laws that the rest of us plebs have to. The beach comment is a daft one anyway- more people visit Paris than London, (imagine that with no royal family) they aren’t going there for the weather and palm trees.

Yes I agree with your first paragraph. The second, on reflection, is a bit more complicated as the other poster said. That being said it wouldn't surprise me if Paris is more popular, royals or not.

I'd like to know where his income is coming from. He's been stripped of all his royal duties so he shouldn't be getting paid from the civil list anymore. Maybe there's some cushy Royal Pension scheme they get.
