'Off Days' and Poor Performances 15:29 - Nov 25 with 2005 viewsRalphinho

Does anyone else find it crazy that every time we gain points it is attributed to the other team having a bad day at the office?

It's never attributed to the fact that our style of play is what has stopped the other team from controlling the game and playing their brand of football. We get a token 'Ipswich played well' but its almost always attributed to a failing of the opponent, not a success for us and celebrating McKenna's tactics.

I understand that there is a 'Big 6' bias, but at some point people are going to have to start recognising that Town aren't just here to make up the numbers and are going to give teams a run for their money.

Rant over.

The longer that narrative plays out and the longer teams underestimate us, all the better.

In terms of McKenna, Delap, and maybe Hutchinson too, the genie is most definitely out of the bottle.

It's an unconscious bias - and you see it where the individual perceives that the correct outcome should be X winning vs Y, and if X winning does not occur the issue must be that X underperforms.

In football, it is not a big 6 bias, it is human nature - it just happens that majority of people assume that the bigger more established side should triumph.

Look how we reacted as fans in League 1 to begin with - the issue was we were poor and not how well the opposition played . . .

It was the same in 2000/2001 and we finished 5th! Just ignore it and smile, we are after all "little Ipswich". The fact that Man Utd are looking to be a top four club and we are in the relegation zone means we have to expect that. At the end of the day it is only our own opinion on performances that matter.

Exactly. Long may it continue.

To a degree though it's like this at every level.

In League One when we were flying whenever we'd drop points we'd talk about how we weren't at the races.

It's always the case largely that any top side will beat an inferior one if they play to their best and it's only when they don't that the other sides attributes, work rate, tactics and ability is really discussed.

Something we have to get used to really at this level. It's fair enough for me.

Until we move up the table then other than town fans any non win against us is a bad day at the office

The values of these squads and with us with only 1 win in 12 games it's natural to assume we will be beat.

We know how our performances are looking.

For example we look at palace v aston villa.. is that palace doing a good job? The consensus is villa had a bad day.

When we've won more games we naturally will get more respect. Until then we are to all non town fans a newly promoted side. 3rd bottom. 1 win all season.

a niche perspective

To be honest though, I did think Spurs looked very sluggish against us a few weeks ago. This was compounded for them by us being right at it.

On your wider point, I get the sense that pundits at large can see signs that we are not - at this point anyway - another Sheffield United or Burnley from last year, but they’re waiting to see a few more wins go on the board before they fully commit to us.

I spoke to 5 Utd fans today, each of them saying how rubbish Utd were. Not one said we played well. I find it totally insulting the way other teams look at us. We are in the same league on merit and it's about time we got the credit we deserve.

I think your narrative is false.

We've had plenty of compliments for the last two results.

Both things can be true. We were good, they were average. Expectations and context innit

I thought it was a brilliant underdog performance against a far superior side.

To hang on for so long after scoring first will give them a huge boost of confidence.

I think there's always a bit of a 'big club' bias but I don't really agree that pundits aren't giving us any credit. Was at the game so didn't see all of the punditry but from the clips Keane, etc seemed to gives us plenty of credit and here Shearer and Richards give us plenty of credit:

If you are seeking praise and appreciation every week from pundits, other teams etc you will be disappointed.

Don't worry about things we can't control and ultimately don't matter.

We as a fan base know how well we are doing, this is all that matters. No need to seek gratification from people who do not matter.
