Not having a centre back on the bench 01:28 - Dec 5 with 1407 views | Woolfenthen | Sorry just don't see the logic in this. It's not as if we don't have enough subs we have 9 to get enough attacking players on it ffs. During Tuesday night's game when O'Shea went down and had to get bandaged up I thought christ whose gonna play there if he has to go off. Sort of understand it if Tuanzebe is playing as he could move inside but the thought of Harry Clarke or Ben Johnson playing there hardly fills you with confidence when the likes of Burgess and Woolfenden have done little wrong to be left out of the 11 let alone the 20. A centre half you could argue is more likely to get injured than most and I'd argue it seems more pointless having 2 full backs on the bench rather than one of each (cb and fb). Just a small point that baffles me somewhat as you're only one injury away from regretting not having a specialist cb there esp if you sustain an early injury. Even seeing a game out, an extra centre back could be very useful also?? [Post edited 5 Dec 2024 1:30]

I guess that versatility is key. Almost all of the bench options can play multiple positions, rather than a dedicated CB who can't really play anywhere else e.g. Woolfy or Cam. Phillips could possibly have come into the CB position if we needed it?

Not only that, but we talk of squad harmony and I get the players are used to starters, finishers etc, but not being involved in the matchday 18 when there's not even a CB on the bench has to pss wolfy and burgess off. Imagine being a solid cb, but you're manager would rather take the risk of playing a bit part fullback in your place instead.

Agreed. If the centre halfs don't get injured up to around the 70th minute mark, then we can also bring him on as a sub forward for Delap. Win win.
