Next 8 games take us to Feb 1st 21:40 - Dec 8 with 2726 viewsElderGrizzly

This is that run:

Wolves (A)
Newcastle (H)
Arsenal (A)
Chelsea (H)
Fulham (A)
Brighton (H)
Man City (H)
Liverpool (A)

No win at Wolves next week and our points total could very well still be 9 on Feb 1st :(
Not being pessimistic, just realistic, but for me that is a huge reality check for us and how bad it could get before it gets better.

We are going to get a random win from a half decent team at some point. Away at Arsenal or something, but not beating those around is our downfall, therefore making that odd win a bit pointless in all reality.

Yeah, when I watch us it’s rare I feel like we’re one of the 3 worst teams in the league but I just can’t see where the points we need to stay up will come from

Agree. Even the pundits say we have more about us than some other teams, but that run is brutal and I fear for how the players/fans will be feeling come end of the window.

Yeah that last sentence is key sadly.

With better game management and not the reincarnation of Lee-Barrett in goal we’d have 18 not 9 points now and that run is less worrying.

I’m not worried about going down, honest.

We have a great backing, and brilliant people. So we won’t drop off the face of the earth again.

Just a bit guttering we’ve seen this chance pass us by, even tho we’ve played really decent at times.

Agree. Biggest concern is McKenna doesn’t hang around.

We can replace players and have the backing of owners to go again

I think playing well most of the time has been the redeeming element.

To keep having to take gut punch draws and defeats is testing the fan base resolve. It would be nice to get one go our way.

In reality for the money spent I am not sure we could have done any better. We have spent the tv money reasonably wisely.

We have a few assets that should fetch big bucks if we go down allowing us to come again.

Don't underestimate this ownership though I am positive we will have their support. Keiran spoke about future windows in his post match. Let's stick together and see where we are in 2 years. This may still turn out to be......the best trip we've ever been on.

The most insanely crazy thing is, this is the most chilled I’ve been about Town in years, and we sort of face going down!

L1, championship promotion pushes, I felt so stressed, about to explode… now, when we are in the ‘promise land’… it’s all have a beer, relax, and take it for what it is.

I’m weird I think

I couldn't say I was chilled texters, but I'm no where near as angry as some here appear to be.
My over riding feeling is one of sadness.
We've worked so hard to get here and it is genuinely heartbreaking as the realisation dawns that we're just not quite good enough to stay in the division.
We're a good team who enjoy spells in matches of some great and fearless football.
To concede that 2nd goal today told me pretty much what I needed to know about our chances of staying up.
No hyperbole. In fact I'm a dyed in the wool Happy Clapper who'll be there next August regardless of what division we find ourselves in.
In some ways I think the sooner we realise it probably isn't going to happen for us this season, the sooner we can just get back to supporting KM and the team without all the pressure of where the next win is coming from.
It may sound defeatist and sure, there are plenty of games left to play, but to find at least another 25 points is going to be a very tall order.
The optimist in me will always back our chances but the realist in me is already fearing the worst.

It's only going to get worse, this will be our worst year in porem history and we've a had a few already. This is going to be worse than 94/5 due to no new manger bounce. (Not a McKenna criticism btw)

We are a good team, but it seems that good is not good enough. This league is brutal.

I was wondering to myself how this team would compete against the 2000 team that came 5th. League position makes the answer obvious, but the change of everything around us is more remarkable. Numbers 1-11 are good but then as now if we have any injury or play a team on a form upturn instead of downtick and we don’t have enough depth to mitigate. We also went from a reliable trusted keeper to someone new who struggled on occasions - switching back then made it worse…

It was always going to be a tall order, so many things against us from the very start.

- The three promoted teams last year going down means that Forest with 3 years PL money are the next 'poorest' financially to us, even Leicester and Southampton have 9 years premier league money out of the last 10 seasons. Therefore all the teams can build squad depth and quality.
- We are hamstrung by the PSR rules, we simply could not invest in squad depth to the level we need to to compete. Perhaps Forest's approach was right, but it is a huge gamble if you do go down.
- The transfer window closing after the season begins is a huge problem for teams in our position, we do not have a settled squad to train with, get to know patterns of play etc. The other teams are just tending to tweak their squads a little, and in this league you lose so many players during international breaks you don't get the training time with the whole squad.

So essentially, we pretty much had a slim chance or no chance.

I like the last paragraph of this post. Big picture is something people often ignore when things are going badly but it’s something we need to keep in mind.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m deeply disappointed about yesterday. Did I hang about at the final whistle to applaud? No - to my shame. I normally do, but I was annoyed, fed up and very cold, sitting as I do towards the front of the West Stand. Got rained on in that swirl a fair bit too. But I should have stayed - the players are giving every ounce and deserve appreciation.

The team plays nicely at times. Far better than any relegation-threatened team I’ve seen at this club. We have some good players too. However, while we threaten to overrun teams, we don’t. Nor to we control games, Leicester apart. Why?

Simple. Teams at this level have for the most part better players. Why? Because they’ve built a PL squad over time. The job bridging the gap in the summer was pretty much impossible. Give it a go or keep the same team and spend nine months getting relegated. Yes, we will most likely go down, but we have given it a go. I’d much prefer the courage and ambition of that, thanks.

Has McKenna made mistakes? Yes. So what. I repeat a favoured phrase of mine that people who don’t make mistakes are those that never do anything. Transfers? Mix of good, potential and not so good. Normal then. KM will be a top manager - you can see what he is trying to do. I see posts suggesting McCarthy style pragmatism. Valid, but not KMs way and compromising the way you think things should be done rarely works.

Have we had much luck this season? I don’t believe in luck, though tbf to those who do the refs have hardly been generous. I noticed how good B’muff were at the dark arts yesterday and how quick the ref was to jump on us, yet again. But when alls said and done we are not good enough individually and collectively. We got exactly what we deserved again yesterday. Nothing.

So what do the club do? Wholesale change in Jan or leave as is? Plan for the Championship and build for the future or bring in people to dig up out of the hole we are in? I honestly don’t know. You have to ask who is out there if you are talking about the now and of course ffp.

We need another forward - so does everyone else. I think our midfield is lacking. It got bossed after half an hour yesterday and at times failed to help out the defence or support Delap. No wonder the bloke was wiped out on 60 mins. I wonder if bringing Humphreys back might help, but then remember the gap to the PL and on balance think he’s better off playing and developing every week there.

I would only bring in a player with an eye for the future. Staying in this division looks beyond us - but there’s a reason I’m not a football manager!

Bit of a ramble post, but I am not going to get involved in some of the McKenna out nonsense and hammering of individual players. There’s no point and doesn’t help anyone unless giving somebody a good kicking, verbal or otherwise, is your thing.

For this football team, keep going, keep fighting, keep working at it.

At the moment its totally different to 94/95. We were simply very poor back then and should have gone down the year before.
We are a much better side now with solid owners and decent infrastructure.

The end result may still be the same. But that is down to a whole host of other factors - Mainly driven by money.

Two more games won but just the one point better off.

Fingers crossed .

We have regularly drawn matches and I do not expect us to lose 11 on the trot even if many of them are against top sides. We do need to learn to see matches out, though.
