Cyril Lea 13:05 - Dec 17 with 2765 views | Sharkey | When Cyril Lea left Town, was he on good terms with Bobby Robson or had they had some sort of falling out? (Is my memory playing tricks, or did the crowd used to sing Tra-la la-la Cyril Lea'? )

Lea is in the Town hall of fame, but I don't know if the club marked his 90th birthday in August, (perhaps in the matchday program?).

Yes, SBR got rid of Cyril Lea eventually, but later admitted he'd made a mistake & Lea was a good man. He also respected the fiery Welshman for backing him up in the dressing room punch-up with Bill Baxter & Tommy Carroll.

Thanks for that. I wondered why Lea was replaced. This sort of thing never made the news at the time. In fact very little of anything beyond match reports and the Green Un (bigger match reports and local results) did. [Post edited 17 Dec 2024 15:13]

Not true. Cyril was also the assistant manager of Wales and when Mike Smith, the Wales manager, was appointed manager of Stoke City, he asked Cyril to join him as his assistant, leaving a vacancy at Portman Road. Bobby Ferguson, who had been trying to get Cyril’s job, stepped up from his role as reserve coach to succeed him.

The explanation that was given at the time was along the lines that Robson wanted to change the style of play to accommodate the acquisition of Muhren and Thijssen, whereas Cyril Lea very much favoured the more direct approach (ie long ball forward to the centre forwards, knock-down to the onrushing midfielders) on which the club had achieved much success in the 70s. They couldn't agree, so Lea left to go to Stoke, Ferguson was promoted to 1st team coach, and the rest, as they say, is history. I remember Robson was very appreciative and complimentary in the match-day program shortly after Lea left (which was in the close-season, if I recall correctly).

i don't know about Mike Smith, but I'm pretty sure that he left Ipswich to go to Stoke (as the 1st team coach).

In December 1979, Mike Smith was appointed manager of Hull City but was sacked, along with coach Cyril Lea, in March 1982. Lea then became assistant to Allan Hunter when he was appointed player-manager of Colchester in the summer, becoming manager after Hunter resigned in February 1983 & he lasted to March 1986.

Very possible, I guess, as Alan Durban was Stoke manager and also Welsh. Smith and Lea joined Hull around Christmas 1979.

I’m fairly sure it was Robson’s decision, as he said in his autobiography that it was something he hated doing but was necessary.

You have to wonder if as much as anything tactical he wanted someone tougher, setting up a kind of good cop/bad cop partnership with Ferguson.

I remember Lea returning to Portman Road with Stoke, not long after leaving Ipswich, and getting a rousing reception.

That’s very possible. Also Ferguson was an excellent tactician.

Yes, Lea did work at Stoke under Alan Durban but must have left to join Mike Smith at Hull City.

That would have been quite a major step down, no? (Stoke L1, Hull near the bottom of L3?) I'm guessing he was 'on the staff' at Stoke, rather than first-team coach or assistant manager, - although someone points out he was given a welcome back to Portman Road when Stoke came to town.
