The HoL should be abolished. The fact that there are several bishops in it amplifies how ridiculous it is.

Coffey on 11:25 - Dec 21 with 1011 views | Churchman | Dear oh dear. I suppose her title will be Lady Pork or something? HoL? It has about the best restaurant in London, all for free. But only the Peers can use it. They refused to merge it with the HoC restaurant when it was suggested to save money. They’re going to need a bigger larder to keep her happy. The House of Lords should have gone years ago. What right does a unelected, failed waste of space, out of touch ex-MP or witless sportsman have to comment or influence my or anyone else’s daily lives? Hoc MPs like to keep it not as some sort of review chamber, but as a big fat all on expenses, free invites to all the good events rest home. No worries about rinsing the hard working tax payer when it comes to that!

There is an extent to which, a bunch of experienced people, many of whom mellow a little with age and are no longer having to chase popularity within their party or the electorate, act as a very worthwhile balance against the HOC. However, we need to figure out a much better, less political way of setting it up, which also excludes hereditary peers and religous leaders. None of whom have a right to be sitting in legislature. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

A second chamber/review body - all for it. An unelected one loaded up with ex often failed politicians when their parties get the chance to load up them numbers, hereditary peers, actors, sports, media famous people sitting there pontificating on stuff they have no right to comment on? Until and beyond when they’re incapable of deciding what to have at lunch? No thanks. If you need a second chamber, which you do in my view, elect it. Edit: attached is what the the hard working tax payer forks out for this bunch in 2022/23. It’s eye watering. 776 of them were entitled to attend and claim the £300 + expenses a day though many don’t. https://www.parallelparliament.co.uk/question/HL10170/house-of-lords-costs [Post edited 21 Dec 2024 12:12]

Also need to end the likes of Toby Young ending up there who has already said he's looking forward to opposing Starmer - hardly the wise head.
