Team tonight then…. 11:30 - Dec 30 with 6804 viewsitfcjoe

Muric

O’Shea
Woolf
Greaves/Burgess
Davis

Morsy
Phillips/Cajuste

Johnson/Burns
Omari
Szmodics/Clarke

Delap

Those are my 4 calls but I’d go with Greaves, Phillips, Johnson and Szmodics

Obviously some fitness queries in there - imagine the second CM and Greaves the main ones effected

Really good explanation of our shape here

https://open.substack.com/pub/jacksaunders/p/tactical-notes-arsenal-v-ipswich?r=

Thanks Joe, enjoyed that, a good read.

I still believe that for the majority of the first half we stayed in a back 5, somewhat aligned with the conclusion:

“ In my view it was the usual base formation of 4-2-3-1 for Ipswich but because so much of the play, especially in the 1st half (with 86% possession for Arsenal and Arsenal dominance in territory and field tilt), was for Arsenal and the Gunners committed so many players to the attacking top line Ipswich had a 5 in their back line during those phases.”

What I think we need to see is a quicker transition from the 5-2-2-1 into the 2-3-2-3 the author references. If McKenna can’t get that fast switch from deeper defensive shape to numbers forward… we’re going to continue to have Delap and Hutchinson isolated and marked out of the game.

But I think it’s positive that McKenna is maybe aiming for a more defensive shape, just to get us more difficult to beat. Add some more attacking players in Jan, and we’ll be a tougher proposition. I do think we lack pace.

One thing about the Emirates is that the lower tier behind the goal is such a shallow pitch that the views to understand the Town shape are really poor. Good to see the photos in the article.

I think that we won't start Phillips twice in four days after so little football this season.

A fully fit Phillips on the other hand, probably starts more games than he doesn't.

A good point and something that highlights Morsy’s robustness. Cajuste can’t seem to last a full 90 and Phillips isn’t properly fit either, seemingly. But he’ll only get that from playing….

Big decisions for KM. I naively and foolishly think we’ll get something tonight. Just a feeling.

That's a good article.

I said it was the normal formation in the second half at least with Johnson much higher and wider where he was providing an out ball from defence. I was told this was nonsense so nice to see such a detailed analysis.

You weren't told it was nonsense at all SB, In fact I agreed with you in regards to how we looked going forwards, I think the other posters did too, The article does however show when Arsenal attacked, we remained organised as a flat 5 which was our point all along and the part of disagreed with you about as you said we changed to a flat 4.

As much as we all love Sam Morsy, if we have any chance of staying up out midfield has to be the players from Napoli and Manchester City.

I completely agree with Blue Monday when they say that we need to get all of our players with Premier League experience in the team.

I don’t think there’s a chance Morsy doesn’t play when available.

I wouldn't select Broady in a Burley 3-5-2 no

Would I select a Broady in a KM 4 2 3 1 when the other forward options aren't working in those roles, yeah, why not

This part of the thread was about a hypathetical change of formation and having 3 cms, it wasn't a discussion about Broady.

Last season I thought Morsy struggled a bit during Ramadan, which is understandable given the energy required in his role.

I'd be concerned that he won't cope with the pace of the Prem during Ramadan at the age of 33.

We may well see more of Causte and Phillips together in March.

Doesnt really matter who the poster is tbh, you look at the post you're replying to and should be able to work out that it's about a hypathetical lineup with 3 cms included.

Muric
O'Shea, Woolfenden, Greaves.
Burns, Morsy, Cajuste, Davis.
Chaplin, Broadhead.
Delap

(Switching to a 4-2-3-1 when attacking, with Burns joining his old pals in the 3 behind the centre forward)

I would go with:

Muric

O’Shea
Woolf
Greaves (Burgess has been great but give Greaves a few games see if he can get into early season form)
Davis

Cajuste
Phillips

Omari
Szmodics
Broadhead

Delap

Start sensible, keep it tight for first 5-10 mins just to get in to the game as we don't want another first minute goal like West Ham, Man Utd or Newcastle and completely deflate the stadium and team, then start to ramp it up. They are not great at the back, so whilst Palmer and Co are a threat I think we can score 2-3 tonight.

I tend to agree. I love Morsy, but have felt in the last few games that he's been sussed a little bit. I also thought Philips looked a step up against Arsenal.

We typically play a traditional right back when at home (some might say Tuanzebe isn't that).

Think he'll keep faith with one of Clarke or BJ for that spot. While the former is somewhat chaotic sometimes I think I prefer that to the often casual Johnson.

I would go:

Muric
Clarke O'Shea Burgess Davis
Morsy Taylor*
Omari Chaplin Broadhead
Delap

*On account of Cajuste not seemingly able to manage many minutes. Taylor has looked assured every single time I've seen him this season. While Cajuste can sometimes get us up the pitch with a good run, I think Taylor can offer similar just with his range of passing.

Neither Szmodics or Clarke are doing anything concrete to be keeping Broadhead out the side, apart from more legs. But legs aren't winning us points at the moment, we need some quality.

No. On on thread specifically made my a poster about broadhead, I said I wouldn't mind seeing him given a start as we've not had that much success with those who have been so it's worth seeing. Why not etc.

On this thread I and one other poster were talking about midfielders and I just threw in a formation that we could play that includes the 3 midfielders and the rest of the side just picked from the previous lineup.

Not sure what's wrong with two different subjects being discussed in two individual threads that aren't linked.

Can't see Hutch being dropped for this unless he has a niggle. Even off the boil he's a start.

Which two of Morsy/Phillips/Cajuste the bigger question IMO.

Suspect we'll be back to Morsy and Cajuste.

What I think we will actually see is the same as Vs Arsenal but with Morsy back in Phillips' place. But with an added firework up the backside of our attack line after KM put it there.
