Luke Woolfenden is the absolute don 07:31 - Jan 6 with 7736 views | chicoazul | Think about that guy, the most Suffolk man in the world, and what he’s been through, coming in as a young player having loans not getting in the team bombed out by Cook, gets back in under Mcgreal and immediately improves the team, becomes a mainstay of two promotions, gets dropped for sexy new Prem players, gets back in and immediately improves the team. He wins headers he wins tackles he’s a beast he doesn’t need to be fast but can be. After a game he shrugs his shoulders win or lose and goes walking his dogs. Why isn’t he the first name on the team sheet? Why isn’t his name sung from the rafters? This guy is our Paul McGrath our Paulo Maldini our Fernando Hierro. [Post edited 6 Jan 7:31]

Luke Woolfenden is the absolute don on 10:31 - Jan 6 by FrimleyBlue | You can't play two left footers in a back 3 hence wolfy picked over burgess imo |
It's because it's still a back 4, so who people think is the middle CB is actually the right sided CB when we have the ball. We just match up man for man defensively (as we always have done) and most PL sides attach with 5 so we match that with 5, when they attack with 4 we match it and O'Shea is the RB then On the position map for the Chelsea game: Match Report - Positional report - Player Positions https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1821284/MatchReport/England-Premier-League-202 You can't even see O'Shea on there because he is basically in exactly the same spot as Burns. And all his touches (Match Centre-Heat Map) are in the position of a RB and all Woolfie's touches are basiclaly on the right hand side of the pitch so has to eb a rightie

Player's primary foot does not dictate which side they play better on - best example is Saka who is one of the best right sided players in the country, yet is left footed.

He's an inverted winger so apples and oranges compared to a CB

If he rates him, why did he drop him in favour of o'shea

Yes, wasn't comparing him to a centre back, merely highlighting that preferred foot does not define position on a pitch . . . that is defined by the system and the coaching. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Luke Woolfenden is the absolute don on 09:13 - Jan 6 by SomethingBlue | Haha .... yes I love him, think he is hugely underrated outside and perhaps inside Ipswich. Hasn't put a foot wrong this season when he's played. Looks as if he'll eventually be phased out but we've all thought that before so who knows, the guy's staying power is immense and everyone's got to be so proud of him. On a slight tangent – we suddenly seem to have a pool of seriously good centre-backs. [Post edited 6 Jan 9:15]

Seriously well stocked in defence. Criminally short up front. That’s possibly the way a relegation struggler would want it, but let’s hope we can find some additional firepower in this window.

Yes. Brighton away, Woolfenden out, O'Shea in.

Great article. Interestingly, what you mention is probably people's biggest issue with him. He doesn't necessarily make the cynical challenge or put his foot in. Usually he doesn't need to in fairness, but it could cost us. In a three, the need for him to do it has been reduced.

Yeah, I think we have seen a few more cynical fouls from him at this level. He bundled Diogo Jota over when he rolled him on matchday one for instance.

Great piece.- really enjoyed that! And spot on. It's his unhurried demeanour and cool reading of what is around him that makes him great to watch. I think he's very underrated.
