14 million people in the UK live below the poverty line 13:33 - Jan 7 with 17511 viewsblueasfook

That's a staggering (and shameful) 21% of the population. Absolutely disgraceful for one of the world's leading economies.

Whatever you may say, you are part of what Robert Jenriick has called an alien culture.

Indeed, many British abroad over the centuries have made little effort to adapt to the cultures they live in. Just take the Raj, countries like Australia where the indigenous language and culture were replaced, or these days all those Brits in Spain who don't learn the language and live in silos but still put tremendous strain on the health service in Spain.

And you didn't answer my question about whether you have learnt the main language where you live.

You are misrepresenting what Jenrick said. In no way do I fit his description of alien cullture. You have just added your disingenuous interpretation.

"Alien cultures" Mr Jenrick warned "some of the millions of people arriving in the UK have medieval attitudes to woman"

In what way do i fit that description?

Care to show your workings?

I presume from your post that you are advocating higher tax. What’s needed is growth. Taxes hinder growth. Not particularly interested in foreign aid either way tbh. Historically, it was offeeed to increase sift power. Brexit has lessened uk’s soft power, so suspect foreign aid budget is less relevant than previously
State efficiency and growth of economy is only way out of this hole imho
This is the opposite of what Reeves and Starmer appear to be doing
They are muddled and incoherent
New, clear thinking start required
Difficulty is, there’s no party offering a clear, coherent and realistic vision for the country

3 main factors in the immigration increase not in order of numbers):

1 Hong Kong residents with British links were allowed to move here.
2 Ukraine war (far bigger impact on Poland & Germany)
3 Massive increase in incomers, especially family members, from India (not sure about other Asian cricket-playing nations);

I genuinely don't know why our last allegedly-anti-immigration govt allowed in hundreds of thousands of Asians. I am sure there are credible explanations.

It’s extremely strange. EU FoM allowed us access to millions of skilled workers, culturally aligned with the U.K. Nuts!!! Now their economies are overtaking ours GDP per capita… it’s a doom spiral, I fear!

Yes. But there are minimum income requirements for Brits to move to Spain post Brexit, albeit you won’t find me supporting type of Brit living in Spain that you are alluding to

Don't bring facts in to it.
Doesn't fit the anti labour narrative.
A 6/7 year old report is much better.

The figure is pretty much the same today. Labour will make inroads into reducing this though I am sure. They've already made a start by giving poor doctors and train drivers a generous pay rise.

The rules may have changed with the result that fewer now move to Spain, but there are several hundred thousand living there since before Brexit, and no doubt there will be wealthier Brits who continue to move there and not integrate.

He caveated the words "alien culture" and I deliberately didn't use the other words he said.

But his words follow a patter of criticism of the failure of immigrants to integrate, something that in my view applies equally to many Brits abroad.

I suppose it's a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

I think it’s a different situation. You are talking about a couple of hundred thousand largely retired and financially secure European immigrants settling in another European country, vs several million immigrants from countries with very different cultural values and norms. I just don’t think it’s comparable. I lived in London many years, and happen to think the melting pot of cultures works well. I like it! The issue comes from financially poor and left behind towns and cities that have a disproportionately high level of relatively recent immigration. I actually noticed this in Ipswich recently. As an aside, whether you or I think it’s an issue or not is to some extent irrelevant, as it clearly is an issue for many people - which in itself is causing an issue!

So you used your own interpretation of what Jenrick said.

Glad we cleared that one up!

But to answer your rather condescending question as to whether i speak Thai, I'm sorry to say that i don't.

However my wife, who's Russian, speaks 6 languages fluently, excluding a fairly reasonable level of the Thai language.

I wonder how many languages you or your partner speak.

You're not really selling your case, and rather conforming to the Briton abroad stereotpe, with use of an interpreter and a partner with a fairly reasonable level of Thai.

As it is, I've never lived abroad but I know French well enough to get by on, and Spanish at a level able to deal on administrative matters with council and tax officials and the like, virtually none of whom speak English. I learnt Spanish when my parents bought a holiday home and felt I needed to learn the language to get the most of the country when I visited there.

Do you think it's at all possible that as a white European living in Asia who doesn't speak the language that the locals might consider you an alien culture?

Another way to see it is we have burdened Spain with hundreds of thousands of elderly Brits who have no desire to learn the language, have failed to understand the very different cultural and religious norms and are a burden on the country's medical services

It's not just elderly people. The neighbour next to my parents' holiday home is 56, and broke his leg about two months before Christmas. I was therefore astonished to find when I saw him in November, that his leg had turned to gangrenous and he had had the half his lower left leg amputated. This had involved numerous trips to hospital, he was confined to his bed, and he relied on daily care visits to get by. No doubt he will need much further ongoing care including occupational therapy to help him walk with a prosthetic.

As it is, he doesn't work (relying on an inheritance) and spends virtually nothing, and so puts very little into the Spanish economy. In this sense, he is not alone because many Brits in Spain have very little to live on.

Having said this, he is the exception which proves the rule because he is fluent in Spanish, and is in demand when people he knows go to the doctors or hospital.

And Spain is a fascinating country, you miss so much of the experience of living there or visiting if you do not at least have a stab at learning the language.

So are you suggesting that having a minimum income level makes it impossible to be culturally alien?
Or are you suggesting that the fact they attain a minimum income level means they don't need to understand the 'cultural values and norms'?

Some of the English expats in Spain are a strange enough bunch. I mean if you've decided to spend the rest of your life in a country then it's a strange enough decision to make to not to bother to learn the language.
Especially when it's a easy enough language to learn ( compared to something like Thai I imagine) and one we have a lot of experience of from holidaying there etc

Surely half the craic about spending time in another country is attempting to learn the language so you can make half arsed attempts to communicate with the locals.

How else are you gonna be able to buy weed off um?
