That's a staggering (and shameful) 21% of the population. Absolutely disgraceful for one of the world's leading economies.

It’s a partnership Ryorry, different skill sets.

She has 4 degrees, I don’t.

She looks after the babies, I earn the money.

Not that unusual when you are in a relationship.

"And why are the ones moaning most about immigration living abroad!"

while that's a good line, current polls show that 70% of the uk population think immigration is too high, a record number, and only 15% think it's about right. so you're actually in a tiny minority on this one.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

So are you suggesting that having a minimum income level makes it impossible to be culturally alien?
Or are you suggesting that the fact they attain a minimum income level means they don't need to understand the 'cultural values and norms'?

No, it was in reference to the medical burden point. The other points are pretty irrelevant tbh. Cultural and religious differences between Spain and U.K. are minimal. I have lived in both countries

There's enormous cultural and religious differences between Spain and the UK. I'm surprised if you lived there you wouldn't notice that.

Obviously Catholicism and the whole opus thing to begin with. Believe me Spanish people don't tend to think that they share a similar culture with yer average Guiri

Apologies, yes 5 years. However,

Last year nearly a million calls to the DWP universal credit helpline required an interpreter.

Would you agree that it is a significant amount, at a significant cost.

They would only be able to claim benefits if their application to stay was successful. Unfortunately, the last government cut the funding for successful applicants to learn English. So they now repl on interpreters.

That is self defeating as it costs more in interpreters for individual applicants than it does in proving English lessons for groups.

The cultural differences are very minor. Spanish people love boozing and partying until (very) late. Religion plays a very small part in most younger Spanish people’s lives in most metropolitan areas. I’m not saying the culture is the same (thank goodness) but the differences are very small!

That's nonsense! When I go there, there are row upon row of bars serving full English breakfast, which indicates no real cultural difference.

Round here, the more usual arrangement is that the most skilled, qualified partner works in an external job so as to earn the most dosh, whilst the other, less skilled or qualified half, irrespective of gender, "looks after the babies".

Not my view, and not I imagine the view of the average Spaniard. In any event, it fails to take into account the fact that there is not one Spanish culture or language.

We weren’t talking about different elements of Spanish culture, it was a general conversation! It most certainly would be the view of most Spaniards. I’m very much getting the impression that you haven’t spent much time in Spain, with Spanish people? As I said, the differences are extremely minor. Not sure how we got into this point tbh, but it’s pretty clear you don’t really know what you are talking about.

Some of the English expats in Spain are a strange enough bunch. I mean if you've decided to spend the rest of your life in a country then it's a strange enough decision to make to not to bother to learn the language.
Especially when it's a easy enough language to learn ( compared to something like Thai I imagine) and one we have a lot of experience of from holidaying there etc

Based on the number of English cafes in the main holiday resorts, people are more likely learn Cockney than Spanish!

Pretty grim stuff, but not representative of the majority of U.K. culture! The median Spanish citizen will be culturally very similar to the median U.K. citizen - especially from major metropolitan areas in both countries imho

Wow! I express a different view to you and you choose to insult me.

Since 1987 (38 years ago), and apart from around Covid, I have spent on average three times a year in Spain (for at least a week at a time), travelling widely and avoiding as much as possible fellow Brits or British bars and the like. Indeed, when I was a bit younger, I often immersed myself in situations and for periods where there were no English speakers, which made me pretty fluent as well as getting to know Spanish people well.

Sadly, I don't do that as much as I used to, so my fluency has suffered a little, but I like to think over the years that I have acquired a pretty good view of Spain and the Spanish. And the fact that I have a different view to you is just life, not grounds for abuse.

Having lived in Spain, yes lived as opposed to holidaying for a week here and there, I completely agree with you. We had Spanish friends and found their mentality similar to that of British people. Cultural differences were not noticed, but that's perhaps because we are blessed to be so well travelled and used to living in various different countries.

Of course it’s too high nothing can cope.

It’s only going to get worse if someone isn’t brave enough to put a cap on the amount of people we have coming in.
